Universities as businesses. No. I recently read an article denying they were anything like businesses - not having the safeguard and watchfulness of shareholders. The author named Professor Swartz and criticised his idea that universities could run as businesses.

Charging foreign students for learning and calling the process ‘exporting’ is just one example of the nonsense that places of learning have become. Worse, they are now openly back-door immigration agents.

Universities should be regarded as not-for-profit organisations, breaking even with student fees and taxpayer funds - like any other government department. Like government schools.

Academics are the very last people we want trying to run a business. They aren't qualified to run a business. Education is not an “industry”, as Professor Swartz claims. I'm sure that he is a very clever man in his field, but his field is not business. Most successful business people haven't been near a university. Horses for courses.

If universities stuck to what they know, we would all be better off.
