Digging deeper on community radio: Triple R and indispensable airwaves : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 25/8/2025

The streaming behemoths have created an odd sense of detachment, and certain listeners are seeking grassroot comforts that only community radio can provide.

Nearly 50 years in fact, Binoy. I broadcast English post-punk from 3RRR, as early as 1980. State Library put on a 40-year 3RRR tribute, in 2016.

Radio is rubbish. Maybe a battery powered one in emergencies, but the ABC, handing out leftist tripe, and commercial radio belting out advertisements, in Australia, is not worth switching on.

I only read newspapers standing at the local news stand, I don’t buy them: I don’t own a radio or television, that majrpes me a free thinker extraordinaire!

My area has a local FM broadcaster, staffed by volunteers on a roster basis. It is totally non-controversial and plays some good music, which I’ve overheard on occasions in the public arena.

I’m with Ttbn on this topic, and many others, but I think there is a good need for community based radio, not the ABC brainwashing type!

Non-community radio is generally designed for those who put on commercial morning TV before listening to the radio in their car on the way to work.

It is designed for shock jocks to be blasted out on work sites to outrage and misinform its listeners.

It is designed to be listened to in the car on the way home before turning on fox news at night.

Younger people and those immune to outrage media obviously prefer community radio.

The ABC understands this as well with its regional focus that brings otherwise ignored news and viewpoints to the public attention.

An example of this was discussed on OLO a few weeks ago with some commentators saying that they wanted to hear more about the Torres Strait Islands and Torres Strait Islanders. They assumed of course that the little news that they received was nonsense.

Listening to RN would have given them the insight they asked for but we know how much RWNJs detest the ABC.
