Let's look at how the Commonwealth has spent money in the past, in this example, during Covid.

According to the Australian Bureau, in 2020, "...subsidies on production rose to record levels, reaching $52.0 billion in the June quarter. JobKeeper payments accounted for $31.0 billion and Boosting Cash Flow for Employers contributed $16.0 billion. Other COVID-19 related subsidies, including those made by state governments, added an additional $3.6 billion. JobKeeper and boosting cash flow for employers are the largest and second largest subsidies ever recorded in the national accounts".

This seems like the old smoke-and-mirrors trick of privatising profits and socialising losses - something we also saw during the GFC.

Does the author consider propping up private industries in difficult times as part of government over-reach and interference?

Should future generations be saddled with the debt used to bail out private industry? Or is government spending only a bad thing when directed towards childcare and the disabled?

So, Davo reckons we’ve slid into Hobbes’ world where government hands us liberties at its discretion?

That’s not how modern Australia works.

Our rights aren’t “granted” by politicians, they’re embedded in law, protected by independent courts, and upheld through regular elections.

Freedoms like speech, religion, and equality before the law are supposedly under “unprecedented pressure,” but where’s the evidence? Australians still openly criticise leaders, publish dissenting views, protest in the streets, and take government to court - and win.

That’s not Hobbesian suppression - it’s a noisy, functioning democracy.

Even Locke recognised that government must evolve with society to protect life and liberty effectively. Modern regulations and safety nets don’t erase freedom, they stop powerful interests from trampling individuals and give ordinary people a fair shot at exercising their rights.

Libertarians are adorable - they want all the benefits of civilisation while pretending they built it alone.

The fundamental freedoms indeed.

The freedom of speech – try criticizing the Nazi Zionist government of Isreal and cop a broadside for being antisemitic. You are free to do it of course, better be ready to cop the vicious backlash.

Freedom of religion – Absolutely, have the Christian doctrine shoved down your neck from early childhood educational institutions onwards. Or live in an Islamic country under sharia law. That sure is freedom of religion. Personally, I vote for freedom from religion myself.

The presumption of innocence is practiced ( not ) with every incident of a crime being committed and reported across all media outlets. It a constant on every social media platform too.

Equality before the law. Tell that to the current president of the USA who simply fires any attorney or law firm he disagrees with.

For years I didn’t vote, believing that there was not a single politician out there worthy of my vote. I have subsequently changed my mind on the issue. I believe it is vitally important to vote. By voting, at least you have the opportunity to keep the really awful ones out.
