Surely every candidate is to some extent a slave to the people who funded/supported them. Is this case only really different in that the underlying funding body and its potential motives are very clear?

I agree with the idea that the person themselves can be a complete mystery and may have a hidden agenda (which is practically a sine qua non of reality shows anyway) but I guess one could almost say the same of an independent politician...
