I have posted this on other fora, but it won't hurt to mention it here.
Quite a few years ago I had time on my hands and I attended a local court to observe the doings of the district miscreants. Among others were the usual number of domestic violence cases.
Later on I had a chat with the magistrate and we agreed that the major cause of DV amongst other things, was drugs and alcohol. The working man's custom of having a few beers after work does not help. The excessive consumption of alcohol in sporting clubs is also a problem.
Domestic violence in aboriginal communities has always been a problem because of the age old custom that allows wife beating, but the introduction of alcohol into their communities has exacerbated the problem because both sexes over indulge.
It seems to be an intractable problem, so Bettina, if you have a solution, let's have it. Police intervention is only a consequence, not the cause, so society needs to work on the cause.
