Imam Muhammed al-Mahdi is said to have lived in the 9th century.
By modern research, Islam has not yet existed at the time, but never mind - There was no Israel either at the time!
Iran's obsession with Israel starts with the fall of the Shah - until then, Israel and Iran were best friends: Iran's present regime simply cannot forget it.
Well, they may use the Mahdi as a convenient excuse, but in truth they just cannot bear the fact that the Shah's best ally still exists.
