Green aluminium? Tell Albo he’s dreaming : Comments

By John Mikkelsen, published 23/1/2025

There’s no limit to what the Labor Government will do in an attempt to achieve the unachievable.

It is well known that aluminium smelting needs reliable power 24/7 because of the electric arc furnace technology involved. Without continuous power, the furnace will cool and the aluminium mix will become a solid mess, which has to be pickhammered out, or the furnace scrapped. Renewables can’t deliver reliable power 24/7. That’s it…it’s not workable. The ‘Green Production Credit’ is just a disguised workaround to allow use of FF power (coal or gas) when renewables are not available. Another propaganda exercise of the ‘smoke and mirrors’ type!

Can't see the article but the credits sound like a greenwash. Batteries, wind and solar can't run a smelter for very long so 'running on renewables' must be a percentage thing. Outside of Russia nuclear power would be more expensive than what smelters can pay so perhaps the credit is a disguised subsidy.

Woke Marxist's destroy with one side of their mouth, and say that "we have to help the poor" with the other.

But Woke Marxist's destroy production, that causes scarcity, that causes poor people to starve, and then complaint about the evil capitalist's. Sadly the poor don't see the steps to their misery, but they like the fact that someone is saying that should be helped.

The poor should be helping production, so that this traps producers into lower prices. If the poor then stock up their cupboards they will be able to protect themselves against price fluctuations.

Marxist's envy Capitalist's but they don't like to get their hands dirty. If they create scarcity then the people will need them, and they can manipulate them.

The Marxist's remind me of the ancient Pharisees.

The Labor government can't stop natural fuels such as coal and oil without a viable replacement. The options for Aluminium seem to be traditional power stations or nuclear power, because they are their own storage, whereas "unreliables" are not, and require an expensive battery system to make them reliable.

Marxist's have many programs to create scarcity.

It's good that Trump is closing these programs, hopefully this will lead to a flow on effect.

Saturation stupidity & maximum incompetence, all from people who are supposed to be smarter than most of us ! Another example of Democracy !

So the plan involves $$billions subsidising fabled "green hydrogen" to somehow power aluminium smelters to produce "green aluminium" with more $$billions of tax payers' dollars up in smoke when a power cut puts them out of production when the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing and the jack hammers come out to chisel solidified aluminium from the potlines. Anyone with a basic knowledge of chemistry would know it will never work and it's just another Labor virtue signalling green con job.

What Albo and Bowen don't understand is that if power is lost for more than a few hours the molten aluminium in the Potlines solidifies and has to be dug out manually This science site explains it:
"The smelting process requires large amounts of electricity. A reliable and uninterrupted electrical power supply is a critical issue for aluminum smelters. Alternating or AC current supplied from the grid must be transformed into direct or DC current, which requires the use of large rectifiers, transformers, and sophisticated monitoring systems located adjacent to the potline building. The most inherent risk in aluminum production is a loss of electrical power. A failure of electricity supply lasting more than 2–3 h can cause the electrolyte in the cells to cool to the point where its electrical resistance is too great when power is restored resulting in shutdown of all cells. It is expensive and time consuming; usually it will take several months, to restart a frozen potline because the solidified aluminum and electrolyte must be physically broken out of the cells. Thus, significant business losses will be incurred due to the interruption in the event of a potline freezing. The remaining lifetime of the cathodes will be shortened due to the extra thermal stresses inevitable with shutdown and restart of cells...." https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/aluminum-smelter

Albanese is typical of a Uni indoctrinated idealist who is convinced that running a Nation is no different to writing a thesis on the sex life of teenage dung beetles !

Albanese should be put on trial for mass immigration.
Dutton is not fit to serve at all.

Meanwhile a Brisbane company is developing a commercial aircraft powered by green hydrogen - book your tickets now, what could possibly go wrong?

How much longer before those idealist idiots wake up from being Woke ? There is no such thing as Green renewable energy !! Literally 99% of products either contain oil or require oil to produce. Just look at wind arms & Solar panels & then there are the batteries !
Are educated people really so stupid not to see that ? I speak with many everyday people & literally every single one understands that. It's like one can only be stupid when educated !

Indyvidual- The woke will refuse to reform- they must be identified and removed from their role. Those in leadership roles within energy should be based on those with practical energy expertise or experience. Signs of a commitment to indoctrination into "battery technology" ideology rather than "embedded storage fuel sources" should be seen as evidence of unsuitability.

Nuclear power probably modular needs to be courted by reputable suppliers. If we are smart suppliers may be able to do much of the heavy lifting regulatory changes
