Voters spoilt for choice: Peter Albanese or Anthony Dutton : Comments

By Stephen Saunders, published 15/1/2025

Regardless of the 2025 election, voters get duopoly dinner: environmental and energy sellout, regressive education, unfair taxation, mega migration, housing hunger games.

I don't have to wade through 7 pages of someone else's opinion to know that voting for the same politicians and expecting different results is a waste of the only vote you will get for another 3 years from 2025.

Both the major parties deserve to be reduced to minority parties.

Well, ttbn, I did wade through the seven pages ... fortunately containing mainly single-sentence paragraphs, so not too dense and taxing! I agree with the author's tweedle dee and tweedle dum characterisation of the two major parties and with your view we should avoid voting for either. That's probably about where the extent of our agreement ends!

I did agree with some of the author's points, but his use of the term woke and his disdain for social justice and the UN destroyed any credibility or resonance his arguments might have had for me. Too many to pick up on individually, but do need to query the implication that the Greens are in part responsible for the current inequity of our education system. The Greens have always advocated strongly in favour of universal public education and against publicly-funded private education. They are not at all complicit in the decades-long partisan promotion of private education at the expense of the public system and should not have had their name associated with it.

Voting for Green, Teal or fair-minded and intelligent independents like David Pocock is the only way to weaken the stranglehold of tweedle dee and tweedle dum. Preferences will be vital ... we absolutely cannot afford four years of Dutton. His nuclear fantasy would end the slow progress we're making towards transitioning to renewables, which of course is exactly what it's intended to do. His divisive dog whistling and hatred for oppressed and struggling minorities would only further threaten our already fractured social cohesiveness.

Dutton's simplistic slogans need to be strongly resisted and his lack of policy detail widely questioned. He is a dangerous fool who should not be given any chance of leading the country.

At least Dutton appears to be from the Traditionalist faction of the Liberal Party rather than the Turnbull Libertarian Faction. Dutton is the best option we have had for a while. They still haven't shown enough commitment to reducing immigration but Dutton has done more than most.
