The Voice : Comments

By John Töns, published 11/10/2023

I will be voting YES. My reason for voting yes is that the Voice enshrines in the constitution a principle that does not just apply to indigenous Australians but applies to all of us.

There are some very broad issues here before we even get to the details. First of all the idea of passing laws based on race is fraught. The UK for example doesn't do it. Next is the incongruous way that light skinned people who claim to be aboriginal see themselves as oppressed and not the oppressor. Another is the additional welfare and spending that aborigines get compared to non-aborigines. Surely that helps ease the supposed pain. As a result of European settlement they have had electricity, clean water, modern transport, modern medicine, writing in a widely spoken language and policing of violence.

Aborigines have held themselves out as victims for that last 250 years. The Voice would make it official; they're victims for at least the next 250 years. Instead of the Voice they could try getting more results for the same money from the Canberra fatcats in the NIAA. They could also get over it.

The collateral benefit of the voice is that these silent voices will also be heard. The voice will sharpen our understanding of the complexities associated with living in a socially and culturally diverse society.

The above is a clear indicator of someone who has no idea !

It seems that the voters in the Aboriginal Affairs ministers seat will be voting NO.

With her incompetence in Parliament, and inability to answer questions, Burney might be getting a big NO at the next federal election as well.

I will be voting no, as will many full blood aborigines fed up to the back teeth, with their aspirations being decide by elite urbanised Mixed race urban "Blacks"! Or unelected elite "Elders"? None of it has worked thus far and needs to change. If the elected representatives cannot change outcomes for the better, then why keep throwing good money after bad?

Off topic and on a personal note, home from hospital after having a malignant tumour removed from the side of my face. The doctors believe they got it all and the recovery is going well.
