Tayyip Erdogan's landslide victory resonates globally : Comments

By Syed Atiq ul Hassan, published 1/6/2023

President Erdogan's major achievement was to keep the country stable and the morale of the people high during the terrible earthquake of February 2023.

Another right wing Government nailed in against US interests.

Never mind, Donald Trump continues lining up well in the starting barrier as unavoidable choice for Republican presidential primaries. Looking good for another US right wing Government with a brain.

Rainbow flags are trembling!

Interesting that Erdogan is against dictatorship but pro-ethnic Turkish. It sort of contradicts the Communist accusation of fascism of Traditionalist politicians.

David F is perhaps right in saying that it wasn't a landslide but perhaps in the light of robust lobbying it was still laudable.

How does this qualify as a landslide victory? It looks pretty narrow to me!

diver,
This isn't about the strawman of rainbow flags; this is about people's futures!

The main loser is not the USA, but Turkey itself. We're likely to see more of the corruption that resulted in the buildings being so vulnerable to earthquakes, more of the economic mismanagement that has caused the Lira to rapidly decline, more the severe repression of the journalists who tell people the truth, and more pointless conflict between the Turks and the Kurds, which are really natural allies (like the British and the Irish).

And people like you not only want more of the same, but want to inflict similar problems on the USA again!

Fortunately demographics is resulting in a long term shift the other way, both in Turkey and America.

Canem Malum,
Only superficially. Not all fascists are the same, and there are significant advantages to having democracy if you think you can control it.

I'm not saying those communists are right. But this is really not a good counterexample.

Not anything like a landslide and one wouldn't be surprised if the election was rigged.

Erdogan, in my view, is a evil man who like Hitler needs a minority to persecute to hold power. Knowing the book by heart proves nothing more than a good memory!

There's no freedom of the press in turkey and Erdogan is, in my veiw, little more than a dictator who changed the constitution to enable him to stand for another term. And then President for life.

Is there no end to this, I believe, evil man's lust for power?
