When I see or hear tripe about sport being used politically, I think of the bread and circuses tactics used by the ancient Romans to dull the plebs' senses to the totalitarianism and incompetence of the people ruling over them and taking things that they need away from them. We have similar thing happening in Adelaide at the moment with three years of football extravaganza that the grinning Premier and the media are assuring us that the other states are jealous off.

It works of course - people love watching other people doing things rather than getting involved in what really matters to their lives, such as being shafted by politicians just wanting to take their minds of what they are up to with childish activities.

Elite sport is a way of being deadly serious about an inconsequential activity. It does not increase knowledge or general well being. It diverts attention from real problems. Hoodlums with physical skills are called legends. One of the meanings of the word, sport, is play. Many animals including humans play. It's a great way to relax. However, the element of play disappears when couch potatoes watch hoodlums compete.

Maybe a couple of trillion would do it and fund every damn thing Jeffery would have us fund for Pacifica. This is dream castles in the clouds thinking, I believe, by someone who has clearly moved in as a permanent resident. We have priorities and we will do what is possible!
