Blurred lines: appointing sitting judges to commissions of inquiry : Comments

By Scott Prasser, published 15/8/2022

The Palaszczuk Government’s decision of appointing a sitting judge to chair a commission of inquiry raises serious questions about whether sitting judges should be appointed to and accept such roles.

The Palaszczuk Government has a strong record of ignoring rules and customs designed to foster good democratic government, in favour of an approach whereby close associates of the government, often ex-members or political employees, are appointed to inquiries or related bodies, in order to protect itself from scrutiny and public concern. No surprise that it continues in that vein.

A female judge (more bias in domestic violence) no less. These 'enquiries' don't usually amount to anything, and sitting judges should be dealing with the backlogs in the appointed job they are paid for.

A commission of inquiry is a fact finding mission! An illumination of the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! And that is never ever guaranteed under our judicial system!

If one wants the truth then one needs to employ covertly deployed, unbeatable space age lie detection, not highly paid, taxpayer funded judges, silks, etc.

As long as sworn evidence is not ever tested and independently verified, the whole truth will remain elusive! Given that is so, perhaps the result is one the government wants as it throws taxpayer funds at this or that or subservient "public servants"? If the cap fits?

(Ve vant an inquiry and dis result, nudge, nudge, vink, vink!) Not saying dat's what occurs, but? Vun vonders?

Like most Labor governments, procedures, rules and laws only apply to others.
