Albanese needs to ‘step up to the plate’ and not avoid debate on aged care, health and welfare reform : Comments

By Tristan Ewins, published 10/2/2022

While the Federal Government ruthlessly pursues welfare recipients over any debts incurred (and even some that have turned out to be unreal), corporations enjoy public money without accountability.

To be honest and fair since the writing of this article Albanese is showing some spine on Aged Care.

Given the ever worsening performance of our stand-for-nothing-except-votes-from-anyone-except-conservatives Prime Minister, Albanese does not "need" to do anything.

Tristan, You obviously have not read last night's passing by the House of Representatives of the Religious Discrimination Act. Now, it faces the Senate, with all the 'creatures that lay there, intent of their own schemes'.

I'm pleased that you have 'changed your tune' on Anthony Albanese's strength of character. There is still a long road to the election; however, Albanese's preparation has been solid and sound. He will stay the course. The 'other guy' will fracture as the pressure mounts.

I think he's been under pressure from others in the Party to maintain a 'small target' strategy ; In areas like Aged Care there is public outrage, however - as there should be. And it's good that Albanese is finally addressing that outrage.

As an aged person needing in home care. I agree that aged care in the home is quite grossly unfunded. Yet far cheaper by more than half, when fully and adequately funded, than the cost of nursing home care!

Even so, elbow needs to keep the powder dry and the annoucements avoided for now, least the new idea free zone that is the coalition. Borrows some of Labor's policy ideas? Save the ammunition elbow until you can see the whites of their eyes.

I think the whole basis of aged care funding is crazy. Basing government funding on bed licences, limiting the number of licences available, and allowing those licenses to have a tradable commercial value, virtually guarantees that aged care homes will never have enough money to provide decent services or wages. It’s a dumb model for taxi licences; even dumber for a social service.

Fortunately, it looks like reforms proposed for 2023 and 2024 will move to a better funding model. Whoever is in power, I hope the new model provides a better outcome for residents, staff and service providers
