Accepting New Zealand’s offer over refugee resettlement is a no-brainer : Comments

By Toby O'Brien, published 12/10/2021

Put simply, the xenophobic claim that refugees resettled in New Zealand will use that country as a 'backdoor' to resettle in Australia is entirely unfounded.

Australia's only duty is to keep illegals out of Australia. If NZ wants illegals, they can just take them and stop grandstanding. Our only concern is to ensure they never come here after gaining NZ citizenship. We have too many NZ undesirables here already.

Of course it's a no-brainer, Toby. But it would be in breach of a much-loved and long-standing LibLab bait-and-switch.

Which is, look over here, at our Sovereign Borders and Stopped Boats. Don't look over there, at our insane mass-migration program coming back real soon.

Sod New Zealand. They opted out of ANZUS by disallowing US nuclear-powered ships in their harbours; they have banned any nuclear-powered submarines we might get in the the distant future; and, although the agreement has not been formally abrogated, the United States and New Zealand no longer maintain the security relationship between their countries. The Ardern woman has insulted Australia often to kill off any friendship with us, too.

Steve S,

Both parties are determined to overpopulate Australia for votes and taxes, by whatever means.

The new NSW premier has already shot himself in the foot by suggesting that we go back to 1950s big immigration and import another 2 million people to 'help the economy', which his treasurer mate in Canberra tells us is doing well. Crazy, crazy people.

Only last night ABC TV showed a migrant family who left Afghanistan went to New Zealand then came to Australia. A key assumption of this article is therefore false. If the plight of refugees is desperate how come they don't settle in the first country that will take them?

We are getting backdoor immigration by subterfuge which makes a mockery of any population policy. Some agricultural workers and former S457 visa holders will apply for permanent residence as will a sizeable proportion of international students, some say as many as 25% pre Covid. It seems politicians of all stripes love Big Australia perhaps because they have a job unlike the 2m Australians underemployed.

Bonafide refugees!? Yea sure and why not! Those that have had their genuine claims validated? yes, sure! The others need to be repatriated to their countries of origin as the only deal, on the table for them! Least we hand our immigration policy settings to criminal people smugglers!

I agree with ttbn. We need to stop importing people/cheap labour and just train those we have here!

If there are skills we don't have? Then allow some temporary guest labour to come and assist the training of our own! And be sure we bid them a fond farewell when they have served our purposes!

As we automate and we will, we just will not need as many workers! We might need some more fruit/crop pickers from time to time and our temporary south sea islander guest labour program is all we need for that!

Since the refugees are no longer behind fences, what stops New Zealand from just sending a ship and take them all aboard?

PNG would surely agree, so who needs Australia's acceptance?

Answer- I guess Toby O'Brien has told us the answer he wants to hear- and will label us as xenophobes if we respectfully disagree with him. This seems to be the standard of polite discussion in the contemporary age.

Yes the open borders between NZ and Aus are problematic and based on an era passed- tricky politics. I suspect that many New Zealanders see our relationship as different than presented by the NZ Prime Minister- sad that she wasn't more supportive of our Anzac Family

The huge mass movements of refugees in the world has become unsustainable- and seems to have become ideologically communist.
