High Court puts muzzle on Facebook trolls : Comments

By Nicole Murdoch, published 23/9/2021

There's a need to continue the overhaul of Australia's defamation laws after a High Court ruling found that Australians with Facebook or other social media pages could be held legally liable for defamatory comments posted on their sites.

Well Paul, that is right and about time.
If someone calls you a pedophile that is something that can come back
to haunt you in 10 or 20 years time.
We have seen these ABC accusations going back 30 years so it behoves
us to be careful of accusations we make.

I hope the a case gets proved soon as nothing will change until all can see.

How do we deal with our political and related elites from the LNP, media and individuals who use social media like Facebook negatively to promote their views and/or troll anything they don't like?

This is backgrounded by radical right libertarian ideology used to justify the same?

Rather than rushing to court for every little thing people need to take comments on social media in the context of opinion or emotion or something else. Perhaps professional media organisations need to be held to a higher standard than social media. Not sure what this means in terms of hidden sources in articles. Claims from hidden sources perhaps can be treated as smoke but not facts.

The danger in going to court for everything is a race to the bottom- people are afraid to say anything- the only ones who win are those with nothing to lose- or those who use those with nothing to lose- but when one section of society goes to war against another sometimes this is what needs to happen- perhaps with the support of unaccountable foreign governments.

I'm sure that the legal industry would benefit from higher levels of internecine conflict- not very productive from the point of view of society-

Oh no- I've defamed the legal industry- I'll be waiting for a knock on the door

Social media consumers need to be aware of the nature of opinion to become more sophisticated about the basis of knowledge.
