We can't rid ourselves of religion any more than we can rid our selves of philosophy. All communities need to have measures to protect itself otherwise it will cease to exist- there is some question as to which measures are valid. Some communities use a system of creative destruction to "ensure stability". This has some relationship with the 'Overton Window'.

If you don't stray too far outside the Overton Window of acceptable dialogue then you won't be persecuted- tyranny arises when the governing body loses touch with the governed.
