By Peter Bowden, published 11/8/2021But the conflicts of this time are only the present-day versions of a timeless problem: the inability of the human race to reach a universal agreement of what is the moral.

Hahaha
Quoting the bible is pretty funny when it supports and endorses slavery. How is that "moral"? Posted by mikk, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 10:58:05 AM

Sorry, Peter. I disagree. Every boy and his dog know what is morally wrong!
It's just that some of us don't give a toss about morality! As long as it's legal and paved with their God, gold? Or if it provides perverted pleasure for the hedonistic, self-indulgent, self-serving, uncaring BS artists? And doesn't that ring plenty of bells for most of us< as we watch the f grade theatre of parliament? Alan B. Posted by Alan B., Wednesday, 11 August 2021 12:40:23 PM

An insight into the confused mind of a “ fence sitter”.
I prefer history for reference, as opposed to ethics committees from academia’s elite, to shine the light on morality. IE. an all inclusive society, which we once held proudly as worthwhile: All white, all Christian and all marching to the same moral drumbeat. Who changed that? Well, this author be one. And as for listing Donald Trump as one of his examples of evil and confusion, it shows how lost is the philosophy of this author. Life is simpler and more enlightened when out of school. Contrary to diver dan mever mind of course the fact that the appearance of the Trumpen-fuhrer signals the complete exhaustion of any kind of universal moral compass or ethics guiding the politics and culture in the US.
Even more so is the fact that he was and still is hugely popular with right-wing Bible thumping American Christians who pretend that they are attempting to bring the "kingdom of god" to the US, and by extension the entire world, all the while pretending that their power-and-control-seeking project has nothing to do with politics. Check out the essay by Katherine Stewart on the Religion Dispatches website titled Whats Missing From Popular Discussions of Today's Christian Nationalism. And of course the benighted power-and-control-seeking "religious" zealots described in the essay I referred to are leading edge examples of the kind of right-wing religiosity promoted by a certain vagabond on this site - as distinct from the "godless" religion promoted by those on the left side of the culture wars divide.

Keep searching DD, it’s a long long road with many a winding turn...
Jeremiah 5:21 (‘Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not’). At the least, your still having a crack at it! Dan Posted by diver dan, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 6:45:43 PM

diver dan, I wasn't aware that Jeremiah too had to deal with Labor voters ? Posted by individual, Thursday, 12 August 2021 8:23:39 AM

We can't rid ourselves of religion any more than we can rid our selves of philosophy. All communities need to have measures to protect itself otherwise it will cease to exist- there is some question as to which measures are valid. Some communities use a system of creative destruction to "ensure stability". This has some relationship with the 'Overton Window'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window If you don't stray too far outside the Overton Window of acceptable dialogue then you won't be persecuted- tyranny arises when the governing body loses touch with the governed. Posted by Canem Malum, Monday, 23 August 2021 7:35:37 PM

There was probably an actual siege of Troy. The Greeks embellished that story by involving gods, goddesses and heroes in that story and making those legends something that should be believed. The city of Athens condemned Socratics to death for preaching impiety to the gods. Likewise Christians have burned people at the stake for doubting that Jesus is the Messiah.
Socrates asked questions such as ‘What is a good life?’ and ‘How do we lead a good life?’ I believe we should try to answer the questions that Socrates put forth. That seems more reasonable to me than accepting religious narratives as real.
When and if we grow up as a society we will realize that what we have told by the Bible are just mainly legends. I was watching a TV program on what scientists have found on the origin of life on earth. Perhaps we will never know for certain because we can’t be sure of the conditions on earth several billion years ago. However, we can be sure that the creation story in the Bible is just another creation story told by tribe people.
Perhaps morality and truth can both be served by ridding ourselves of religion
