Those that say we don't believe in carbon tax simply don't understand, that what they believe just doesn't apply to the rest of the world. A carbon tariff is soon to be reality and with it, coal so worthless we won't be able to give it away!
Sitting on hands protesting that you don't believe in taxes won't prevent other nations tariffs from hurting us or our exports!
New technology won't fix anything if it doesn't include (on-again, off-again) bipartisan support!
Meanwhile, the cage-rattling anti-nuclearists/activists keep spreading their fearmongering lies about peaceful use, nuclear energy! And simply don't get there's a very safe way to produce energy from nuclear reactors that contain none of the dangers they endlessly waffle on about, including waste that needs to be stored for thousands of years!
Given there are a couple of alternatives to which none of their fearmongering lies applies!
Nuclear power as, cheaper than coal, MSR thorium (1 cent or less PKWH) is one of those aforementioned alternatives. The other, MSR retasked to burn the world's stockpie of nuclear waste! Creating thousands of year's worth of almost free power!
Virtually free as long as it's not asked to carry profit extracting passengers! Or front-loaded, stupidity personified, cascading taxes.
There's vastly more tax to be had from the huge lift in production, manufacturing and export than any that we might stupidly front load, which then cancels out all the possible increase in productivity, stillborn!
