As we are talking "musts", the Palestinians must get rid of Hamas; they must become educated, especially the women; they must get rid of mad mullahs; they must realise that the supposed word of Allah actually came from an illiterate, violent paedophile.
Israel must continue to defend itself. The West must support Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East in any way necessary. We have wasted time, lives and money militarily involved in Muslim countries not the slightest bit interested in democracy. It would have all been better used helping to defend a brave little country much like ourselves. Posted by ttbn, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 10:13:32 AM

There is an explosion of anti-Semitism across the Western world; there are so many similarities between now and the 1930s. The Socialists are acting like the National Socialists they ignorantly call "right wing".
A 600% increase in attacks on Jews has been reported in the UK. The media is up to its eyeballs in the hatred, as are universities. The Socialists who always waffle on about racism are not only not defending the Jews against racism, they are actually fomenting the racism - and they include the few miserable specimens of Socialism on OLO Posted by ttbn, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 11:16:21 AM

The recent developments in Israel were inevitable.
Permanent conflict punctuated by periodic carnage has existed for nearly 75 years. Israel's policies are designed to ensure the perpetuation of a Jewish majority which is accorded superior rights and privileges to Israel's Jewish citizens. Chief amongst the policies is the lion's share of land within Israel. Israel's policy is - permanent control of the maximum amount of of land with the minimum amount of Arabs. Even without the depredation routinely meted out to Palestinian citizens of Israel (20% of the population) the different status of the Jewish and Palestinian communities as a matter of policy is enough to ensure permanent mutual hostility between Palestinians and the state and the deepening antagonism between the communities. This will persist until there is a change in the balance of power. That either results in Palestinian capitulation or fundamentally the transformation of Israel. None of which is about to happen any time soon - not as long as the US keeps arming Israel. Posted by Foxy, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 11:17:02 AM

The Palestinians must accept that this is 2021 !
Once they achieve that everything else will fall into place ! Posted by individual, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 11:20:23 AM

No, sorry. There needs to be some goodwill shown by the occupiers starting with the dismantling of illegally annexed occupied land! And that has to include Jerusalem.
It cannot be, defer, delay for another five years as more and more illegal land grabs are the order of the day, along with a Gestapo style police force and courts little more than puppets of the state? When will there have been enough bloodshed? Say when six million Palestinians have been killed? Or when the apartheid state of Israel has no friends left? I believe that the Israelis need to show their bona fides, and evacuate the purloined property and cease and desist in other moves designed to entrench the conflict! Move the capital back to Televev and out of Jerusalem! The Palestinians may well compromise and allow (some of) the large border towns to remain? With that done a truth and reconciliation commission could be established with representatives on both sides at the table! And cannot be someone whose political/power-hungry interests are served by conflated and never-ending conflict! I believe, the warmonger Netanyahu needs to be sidelined and sent packing if you ever want to see an end to the conflict or indeed the continuing illegal annexing of occupied land! If all able-bodied Jews had to do a turn in the army, The peace process might accelerate at an unbelievable rate? Even more so if the orthodoxy alone, were charged with the forced evacuation of the illegal hilltop settlements! And then blue helmets asked to come in as peacemakers for at least five years as a two-state solution gets us past the bloodshed. Bloodshed, which somehow needs to be forgiven and accompanied by genuine remorse by those on both sides, with innocent blood on their hands! Alan B. The Hamas/Palestinian terrorists will never accept Israel's right to exist; they are mad dogs to whom coexistence with Israel is not possible.

I'm sorry but peace on earth is impossible with Islam.
Islam has NEVER done peace with anybody in 1,400 years. Posted by imacentristmoderate, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 1:25:45 AM

The recent developments in the Muslim world clearly shows that if you are a Christian, a Druze, a Yazidi, a Zoroastrian, a Buddhist, a Sikh, or a Hebrew, in an Islamic country, you had better get the hell out of Dodge. And non Muslim population levels in Muslim have plummeted in the last 100 years.
Islamic policy for 1400 years were designed to make life very unpleasant for non Muslims in order to force them to convert to Islam. This included onerous taxes, compulsory military service (the Janissaries), confiscation of land and property, not being allowed to ride a horse, not being permitted to carry a sword, and in the streets and footpaths, non Muslim had to always give way to Muslims. Add to that the likelihood of your pretty daughters disappearing if they walked down a street alone. Foxy cries because the Israelis are doing to the Muslims, what the Muslims have been doing to everybody else for 1400 years. Most of the Middle East was once Christian, then along came Mohammad and his armies of armed robbers, gang rapists, and religious nutcases, who made the rape and armed robbery of non Muslims a state pastime. Looks like poetic justice to me. Posted by LEGO, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 1:29:57 AM

I think Alon's got it the wrong way round.
There can be peace without a process o reconciliation, but reconciliation is unlikely to work unless there's peace first. Posted by Aidan, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 1:45:32 AM

This guy has a different solution to the issue...assassinate Hamas leadership.
http://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/tyler-o-neil/2021/05/24/son-of-hamas-founder-urges-israel-to-take-down-hamas-leaders-even-during-ceasefire-n1449286 He's the son of one of the Hamas founders. He says the Hamas leadership, having provoked Israel, sat out the bombing in safety while they left the Gazans to face the music. He wants them held accountable. We should remember this wasn't a Palestine v Israel war. It was Gaza/Hamas v Israel. The West Bank was and remains quiet. So the solution is to make the Hamas leadership, which is holding the Gazans in virtual prison, pay for their actions. Then they'll think again before launching aggressive war. “The silence of the majority of Gaza is not because they support Hamas, but because they are afraid of Hamas...The people live in fear. Hamas rules over them by the sword. If you oppose Hamas they will shoot you or hang you immediately. You and your family are finished.” Posted by mhaze, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 1:20:58 PM

It's the old story about the boy-scout who was so eager to do his daily good-deed that he "helped" an old lady to cross the street.
- He just forgot to ask the lady whether she liked to get to the other side: she happened to be on her way home, which was on the same side! This describes the situation between Israel and the Palestinians: [the leadership of] both sides want war, not reconciliation, yet the author and so many other do-gooders try to advise them on how to achieve that last thing they wish for! Hamas must do that...."
There must be reconciliation..."
Is this guy living in a cave? If he was around in 1939, I could just see him mouthing off about "Hitler "must do this...." And of course Hitler and the Nazi party would have done just that. Like the Arab Muslims, Nazis are really swell guys who would do anything for peace.
The only way that there will be peace in Palestine/Israel is when one side or the other wipes out their competitors. The Arabs want to wipe out the Israelis in the traditional Muslim way. Attack, keeeeel all the men, make the women your spoils of war, and force the Jewish children to become Muslims. This method has worked a treat for 1400 years and is very popular among Muslims.
The Israeli way is to keep squeezing the Muslims out through immigration and taking more "Arab" land to house the new arrivals. This particular method of ethnic cleansing is very popular among western lefties who see immigration as the final solution to getting rid of the hated white race in the west.
