Why not evil? : Comments

By Peter Sellick, published 18/3/2021

We don't have to buy into a Manichean division of the world into good and evil or the existence of the devil to have a sensible discussion of the existence and origin of evil.

which side sits the evil; and judged by what standard?
diver dan,
Perhaps "Right is not perfect but Left is evil" is more apt.
By what standard ?
I use Politics & political supporters as a benchmark !

Dear Peter,

.

You ask : “Why not evil ?”.

Because, as you seem to acknowledge in your article, there is no such thing as morality in nature.

Yet, in a single night, wolves kill more sheep than they could possibly eat. Why ? Because that is the way their natural predator impulse drives them to act. Wolves are not evil. They do not commit evil acts. Nor do they commit sins.

Evil, the devil without a “d”, is a purely human concept that has no existence in reality (nature).

As Wittgenstein might say, “evil” is simply a word that expresses information in the form of a proposition – just a question of semantics.

That’s a bit basic old mate!

The best way to view evil from a Christian perspective is, to consider the concept of heaven.

Those destined for heaven, are those whose sins are forgiven through holding to the teaching of Christ.
Keeping firmly in mind that evil is inherent, and classified in the doctrine of original sin.

So to get to heaven, one must be a believer in that concept, that all our sins (evil intents and actions), are forgiven.

Not forgetting of course, that the saying attributable to Christ specifies the near impossibility of making the transition based on works, (another doctrine applicable to this is the concept that God chooses who he “elects” to be saved from the other sinister alternative to Heaven, IE hell).

The best way to envisage Heaven, is to eliminate all earthly ( human) failings and grievances, and imagine your worst enemy standing beside you.
Heaven, as a place of joy, can only work if one hundred and ten percent of concentration is directed away from evil and towards the motivation if appreciation of a creator, and praises towards him.

The above is not intended as a sermon, but as a thought out concept, where if left to our own devices, the reward of evil is a bottomless pit full of past demons (memories) to torment us eternally.

Maybe someone in the past knew more than we do in this enlightened (sic) age.

diver dan, I can answer the question about left, right, good, bad.
(Evil is simply someone who is extremely bad).
The word "left" began back in the Latin/roman times, and it began with the word "sinistra" which is still the same meaning in Italian today, which is a direct derivative of Latin.
The word "sinistra" which was ALWAYS used to describe, "LEFT".
But at the same time it was adopted by the English language into the word "sinister".
You can tell it is clearly so, simply by the pronunciation and that they sound alike.
And so it is that LEFT is considered BAD, and Right by some strange coincidence, turns out to be right in terms of right and wrong.
So it is that the left is in fact the wrongens and the right is then the opposite.
They are by deduction, natural progression and historical record of the language which happened organically, to arrive at the conclusion that left is bad, sinister, negative and even evil.
Where as the right is and has always been good, positive and of course, right!
So then, what can we deduce by this?
It's amazing how this revelation has proven to be so prophetic, as the left are and have always been unnecessary extra's in the machinations of life.
Better described by such naturally appropriate words as; Left out, Left behind, Left over, Left to rot, and so the theme continues in what is a natural and justified description of the left.
