Quarantine and immigration : Comments

By Don Aitkin, published 16/3/2021

Quarantine in commercial hotels in major cities has demonstrably failed, with four outbreaks in four states.

I prefer no quarantine hotel in Toowoomba which risks positive cases released into the community and risk Toowoomba going into Lockdown. Mr Wagner can build his hotel but send returning Aussie residents and citizens to e.g. Christmas Island where facilities already exist.

Stranded Aussies have a right to come home. The fact we close down or close out (by quarantine restrictions) entire states when hotel cases occur is hysterical overreaction.

Given the evolution of the virus mass vaccination will not raise, greatly, the already huge probability of surviving infection, and if the occassional case arises in quarantine it must be balanced against the health and safety plight facing many stranded Aussies. Before they even get on a plane now they have to have a negative test, so the chance of infection in quarantine is much lower than it was. Caps were not lifted in response to this and are at or below the arbitrary levels originally imposed.

Hasbeen's position is irksome. I'd love him to be in the shoes of some of those he writes off as lesser Australians for not being here. My forebears who died in wars would turn in their graves at his attitude.

Luciferase, I spent some years working overseas. I chose to do it, & I didn't believe Australians owed me anything, or any help if I got my self into trouble because of my decision. The same applies now.

In the same way I would not expect to come home bringing trouble with me, then or now. I would not be against the establishment of an off shore quarantine station, where people could quarantine at their own expense, before returning, but if they chose to work over seas that was their choice, & we owe them nothing.

Any one who went off touring after the pandemic started deserves everything they suffer.

Politics certainly makes strange bedfellows, Don.

Kevin Rudd also runs the insane line that we should have a population of 50 million, and that would give us defence protection. As if.

As for quarantine, dear Jane Halton's (AO PSM FAICD FIPPA) simultaneous occupation of the COVID Commission and Crown Resorts Board says it all.
