As the virus spreads the PNG health system collapses : Comments

By Jeffrey Wall, published 12/3/2021

In a country of over eight million people there are just 500 doctors and about 4,000 nurses. Tragically, a significant number of nurses and other health workers have contracted the virus.

I wonder what advice Mr. Wall gave to PNG when he was involved with that country. Did they heed his advice? He is now giving advice that "The Australian Government needs to assist PNG with the supply of skilled doctors and nurses". Will the Australian government take that advice?

Mr. Wall is full of advice on what Australia "needs" to do in regard to a self-governing, sovereign country that perhaps should have been advised of the problems it faced when it decided to go it alone and reject Australia's 'colonialism'.

"The Australian public will support this if ….. ". It is very doubtful that the Australian public, with its own problems, would support a bunch of ingrates who still badmouth Australia for its past "colonialism" and who look like cuddling up to Communist China. And it is also unlikely that Canberra is interested in Mr. Wall's advice. They are too busy still trying to justify their own virus/vaccination/economy-trashing balls up.

It's the Mr Wall's (Political Consultants) of this world due to their lack of foresight who create such difficulties such as PNG is now experiencing.

Ateday,

Just saw this on the news:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-12/chinese-island-lease-on-remote-wa-island-causes-concern/13240282

If I had my way I would cancel the visas of all the Chinese and send them packing back to China.

I heard there are about 60,000 illegal Chinese in Australia that they cannot find. That's 60,000 people who will not be getting inoculated against the coronavirus thus keeping the virus alive and well and spreading at a supermarket near you.

Mr Opinion,
You'll be pleased to know that on the other side of the PNG border, just about every business is run by Chinese. The biggest employer of indigenous is the Public Service similar to here.

individual,

I'm glad to see that Australia has finally realised that jumping into bed with the Chinese was a bad deal.

Problem now is how to turn back the clock.

I reckon cancel their visas and citizenship and send them packing to China.

Bite the bullet and do it asap because the longer we wait the worse it will get.

Let the Chinese be other people's problem, not ours.

I wonder if the one talk system is breaking down these days. From memory PNG had about 200 languages, & a couple of thousand dialects. Those who speak your dialect are your one talks.

It is a wonderful system for primitive tribal societies, but causes real problems in a more developed economy. If you have something your one talk needs or wants, you must give it to them. This is great in a tribal subsistence farming situation, but a catastrophe if someone tries to run a trade store. Hence the plantation manager, or Chinese run the trade stores. The individual only owns what he can carry in a shoulder bag.

I had fun dealing with this. When a village needed a major part for the village truck, like an engine, half a dozen men would come in to pay for it, each with their shoulder bag. When asked to pay they would look from one to the other, finally all settling on one man. He would open his private bag, & count out some money. When I said not enough, the process was repeated & another man would count out the same amount. It could take half an hour to get a $350 invoice paid in full.

There are thousands of Chinese trade stores through out the islands & particularly PNG. They supply most staples like rice & tinned corned beef, which have become staples. One plantation owner complained that he had brought in quality tropical cattle to graze under the palms, but the locals would not buy his fresh beef, preferring corned bully beef in cans, from the Chinese trade store in the next village.

He reckoned that the locals would have trouble surviving today with out the Chinese trade store, such was their penetration into the food chain.
