Australia must take the threat to the Manus Island naval base project seriously : Comments

By Jeffrey Wall, published 18/6/2020

Even though PNG's relationship with China grew stronger during his eight years in office, O'Neill skilfully maintained excellent relations with successive Australian governments.

I can't look past the blind hypocrisy here.

Australia swings open wide its doors to Chinese investment in the Australian property market in particular; and industry in general, with glee, then is spooked by the same Chinese investment in PNG.

Let's get clear and consistent on this issue.

Why is Australia and the rest of the free (for how much longer?) world sitting back and watching China encroach on us? They accepted China's illegal colonisation of the South China Sea. In Australia, under the biggest threat, how much longer will Scott Morrison remain in a stupor?

PNG would be wise to listen to its local leaders and reject any Australian-American military base on Manus Island. Australia desrves no special treatment. It has treated the Manus population with total disdain. It did not consult with the locals when it imposed an immoral and illegal detention centre on which to dump its unwanted asylum seekers. The centre brought little material benefit to the locals. It did nothing but cause them grief and saddle them with a bad reputation. PNG is not at war. It has no need for a foreign military base on its soil and hopefully its local leaders will stand up strongly and resist any such imposition.

I don't know how we can convince the corrupt PNG government from doing deals with China, when we can't even convince the Victorian Labor government from doing exactly the same thing. Thank heaven's the Chinese have not asked that idiot Steve Bracks if they could lease the Port of Melbourne for a naval base. Yet.
