Trouble on the beach : Comments

By Peter West, published 28/4/2020

There are a tangle of issues all together. What are beaches for? Who are they for?

You Sydneysiders seem to be having a lot of trouble with beaches, alright; you don't know what 'stay off them' means. You have to be threatened, fined and even dragged off beaches like Chinese dissidents. And, you seem to be handling the China virus, the disembarking of diseased people off ships etc about as well as they did in WuHan itself. Of course, you have that permanently bewildered woman premier and Health Minister Hazzard, who's name should be spelt with one zed.

For the 'premier' state, you are an embarrassment to those of us to the west of the Great Divide. We South Australians and Territorians are quietly going about our business and dealing with things, although I have to admit we really haven't had to face the beach test because it's a bit nippy for the beach going this time of the year.

I won't mention WA, because those of you who have heard of it think it's a different country, a loooong way from the only place that matters to you.

As we saw in Bondi, beach-going Sydney-siders are an incredibly self-absorbed, selfish, I'm alright Jack, bunch of ultra privileged R soles.

Who to a generic man believe that this pandemic is for everybody else and explains why they are the leading state in infection rates and covid-19 related deaths?

Who owns our beaches?

Beaches are crown land, which means, they are the peoples' property! And managed for them by sometimes extremely autocratic administrations?

If the water is too cold, wear a wet suit. Or once travel restrictions are lifted, head north to tropical climes where he water is warmer?

As someone who has been virtually confined to barracks for three and a half decades by mobility limitations/personal injury. Have little or no sympathy for those precious wimps who think having to self isolate for up to four weeks, act as if it's a life sentence or the are the newest versions of Robinson Caruso?

There are some really, really tough times ahead and a lot of these wimps are so fragile, poor little ikle diddums, they'll go to jelly babies when asked to become more self-sufficient and do something for someone else or their fellow Aussies!

My message to those crowding in like sardines on Bondi beach during the lockdown.

Don't be an R sole all of your life, take a day off.

Older people are urged constantly to be more active. Swimming is often recommended as a moderate activity that gets older people off the couch, away from the TV and out in fresh air. So why are we stopping people having a swim?

Swimmers weren't prevented from swimming as that was allowable exercise!

Just those clowns who had to congregate like packed sardines as they lay about on the sand!

You know, the aforementioned R soles

people are not stupid. They know there is little harm in sitting on a beach providing a safe distance is kept from strangers. Really pathetic when you see fear producing a Police State which will end in more death than allowing people to use their brains.

How many people could see Maroubra or Tamarama on a hot day and not want to jump in the water?

Even in Parramatta or Gundagai you can get a swim on a hot day. Dear me....

Waverley,
Not me, I'm too used to a cleaner environment with the nearest swimmer 10 miles away !

Waverley,
Come to think of it, with so many people in the water, one small area such as Bondi & Maroubra must surely be a fertile environment for some future virus

Bondi Beach can get crowded- on the sand.

Most people just have a dip in the water on most days.

I'm not sure how this virus survives in sea water. Some have swum in the sea for 40 or 50 years and seem pretty healthy.

The literature on ageing urges people over 50 to get off their butt and get moving. Do you, fellow commenters?

Do a search on swimming in cold water
or
Ocean swims are good for older people

Well the Chinese make things that last well and go the distance....
the virus being a good example.

Oh- and the Chinese are snapping at anyone who wants an independent enquiry.
Not sure if Scomo has provoked them a bit clumsily- or whether they are just ultra touchy....perhaps even bullying people into agreement?

Waverley,
Do you know anyone that is actually independent enough for such an enquiry ?

Considering what passes for humour and amusing comment in the media these days-take the ABC for example- awful stuff, I barely smile, just reach for the off button.......... I'll keep trying to make a joke here and there

Waverley,
The way I see things, defence of incompetence, stupidity, greed, megalomania, indoctrination etc will always be un-funny !
The line;..USA is making a name for its wisdom, balanced judgement, thoughtfulness, is in my opinion one such occasion.

My information is that sea water will kill most nasty organisms. Ear infections generally come after swimming in badly-chlorinated pools.
How sea water sustains life for whales, lobsters, crabs and such- but kills nasty viruses - is just one of God's miracles.

Drinking bleach is not recommended by any but D T or the followers of rather unusual churches based in the US
