'…I am proud to be a socialist' : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 5/3/2020

If the issues that address human rights are labeled 'socialist', then I must proclaim that I am a socialist to the core, and I invite anyone to challenge the premise of my conviction.

This is where the idea of human rights always falls down. Human rights are Christian idea that assume a cultural universal that clearly doesn't exist. It's particularly apparent when you try to equate positive rights with negative rights.

A negative right is something that does not require an action on others, whereas a positive right does. Freedom of speech is a negative right, it does not require others to act. Healthcare is a clear example of a positive right. Obviously, the ideal would have no one dying or inconvenienced by sub-optimal healthcare. However, it requires action by others. Who pays and who must act are always questions that must first be answered.

Positive rights often conflict with negative rights too. What about freedom of association? What about freedom of thought? Is a Catholic doctor required to perform an abortion? Must a minority doctor serve an active racist? How much can doctors reasonably charge, considering the amount of training and effort we require of them? If I do not get sick, should I be required to pay for someone else's treatment? Does it make more sense to put money aside to cover health issues as a community action (this is how private health insurance started)?

Well, if believing all that makes one a socialist? Then a bloke we know as Jesus Christ also fits that description!

And that conservatism and Christianity are mutually exclusive ideologies!

And no amount of table-thumping bible bashing changes that! As always, actions speak far louder than words even if bellowed by (you'll all go to hell) judgemental, belligerent, bellicose, bible bashing boosters! Who to a generic man know none of the factual histories of the idolatry they support?

The Professor professes to be a Socialist as long as he has access to other peoples' money by the sounds of it.
Nowhere does he say how he creates revenue that he spreads in his socialist manner to the many needy & how proud he is of doing his socialist thing.
He sounds like he means well but does he actually do well ?

yep, it is a pity that Sanders gets bagged because of his association with that silly word 'socialism'.

if he could show how a nation can create wealth yet deal with the many issues that affect the many, then he would be a great leader of the USA.

spend, spend, spend as long as its money from others who have worked hard to earn. Allowing schools and uni's to become filthy by the hijacking socialist is the West's biggest failure. You would think someone with Dr before their name would be capable of thinking. Shows they are not.

This bloke proves yet again, that only those totally incapable of even the lowest level of arithmetic, let alone real math could ever become a socialist.
