Are there any cultural practices, dear reader, which YOU find abhorrent, such as forcible sex in marriage ? Should women walk three paces behind their ruling man (father, brother, husband) ? Is genital mutilation generally acceptable ?

5. Dickens, Shakespeare, Virginia Woolfe, Margaret Atwood, Chekhov, Goethe, etc., etc., wrote about characters which they did not fully resemble - men write about women, women write about men. Historical novels are about people in different times and societies, so living writers shouldn't write about people in those different times ? Wow, there goes 'Othello' and 'The Merchant of Venice'.

6. So Black writers, such as James Baldwin , E. R. Braithwaite ('To Sir With Love'), Chinua Achebe, Alice Walker, etc., etc. can't depict non-Black characters ? Amy Tan can write only about Chinese characters ? Kath Walker shouldn't have mentioned whitefellas in any of her poems ? V. S. Naipaul and Salman Rushdie can write only about Indian or Pakistani characters ?

Everyone's a critic. As long as they don't actually stop you from being able to write as you see fit, then take it for what it is and no more. You can't please everyone. Some times the critics have merit. Often they have nothing more then different tastes. Unless the literary judge is an actual judge, none of this matters more then then someone complaining about the "in thing" to complain about. Apparently that in thing is to drive standards against diverse stories because they don't like the details of the writers. (Not the details of the story).

The critism has no merit, so move on. Write anyways.
