By Max Atkinson, published 5/9/2019We should condemn UK politicians, therefore, not for hedging on the promise implicit in the referendum but for making this commitment in the first place.

For people like Max, democracy is a real inconvenience to the sort of utopian world he envisions, where the intelligent people (like himself) tell the Great Unwashed what is good for them.
Representative democracy was not some form of democracy that the people of western countries ever clamoured for Max. It was imposed upon them from above in order for elites like yourself to keep the plebs at bay, so that they could do deals among each other and frustrate the will of the people by colluding together. Nobody ever asked the electorate how democracy should be. But most people would say that politicians should do what the majority tells them to do.
Delaying Brexit, and the Federal election where one Nation got 12% of the vote and got no seats in parliament because of Lib/Lab backroom deals over preferences, while the Greens with 8% of the vote got 6 seats for the same reason, were object lessons in how elitist politicians will frustrate democratic decisions if they can.
At least with a referendum the public can finally tell politicians what it is they want, instead of politicians imposing decisions from the top down.
Britain chose to leave the European Union by majority decision Max. It is the duty of politicians on both sides of the house to implement the majority will. If you don't agree with it, that is too bad. I don't agree with homosexual marriage but most people in this country voted for it, so that's it. I don't cry and whine and demand a new referendum or a new election.
