How did it go so wrong? : Comments

By Max Atkinson, published 5/9/2019

We should condemn UK politicians, therefore, not for hedging on the promise implicit in the referendum but for making this commitment in the first place.

They went for a referendum because they could not agree on
what to do. Just as now they were divided.
The decision was made for them.
All they have to do is implement that decision.
Unless they go to Brussels with the "No Deal" hanging over
them they will have no leverage in getting a suitable agreement.
No deal will mean the World Trade Rules will apply which is how we all operate.

Democracy is not something the UK can claim to champion anymore. That, so long after a democratic vote demanded Brexit, it still hasn't happened, is a disgrace. As a person of two thirds British descent, I have to say that I am very embarrassed for once-Great Britain and the Brits themselves

It went wrong because Emporer Boris saw an opportunity to get his hands on the power he craved and now instead of Brexit, we have Wrexit!

And what happens when power junkies put personal ambition ahead of the national interest. And self-evident on both sides of the political divide!

There's only one way to fix this dog's breakfast and that is via a general election and with an exit without a deal flagged by Boris and Co.

The Labor "Leader" also as to decide whether he's for staying or going! It just cannot be all thunder and roar about what the other side is doing wrong! Just so he can wear the PM's mantle/robes of office!

I cannot think of a more inept, more divided ambitious cretins, in a parliament full of self serving control freaks, unless it's ours!?

And a complete shower, or as one Sargent Major would have stated, a bagful of farts, tied up in the middle and almost as useful!

If voting on a referendum was compulsory and failure to vote could result in a substantial fine!?

Then a genuinely representative referendum would not only allow the "politicians" to know the actual fully representative will of their employers, but implement it as well!

And if such a vote showed that Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland all wanted to stay and only a more populous England and Wales wanted to leave?

Then that's is how it ought to be settled with a hard border between Scotland and England! And then only place where a hard border wouldn't involve a return to the troubles of a divided Ireland!

For the people, by the people, of the people!

Alan, Ireland has not been part of the United Kingdom for nearly 100 years.

Maybe I haven't taken enough notice of Brexit, but it seems that Britain has two options, each of which its 'government' could exercise pretty much straight away:

* . withdraw from the EU, accept no favours from it and get used to a hard Irish border;

* . or buckle, and crawl back under the EU blanket; maybe after another referendum; and pretend none of this has ever happened.

Didn't anybody have the wits to try to foresee what might happen before the referendum in 2016 ? Are Poms all just a bunch of smug, smart-arse simpletons ? Too far up themselves to see sensible daylight ?

No Loudmouth, I don't think that they thought the EU would offer an
agreement that tied them to EU laws permanently. So it was rejected.
The EU knew it would be unacceptable.
They knew that the majority of parliament were remainers and would
sabotage Brexit given half a chance.
This what they have done.
What Boris should do is go to Brussels and say do you have another
offer. If they say no just the same.
Then he can say Parliament rejected that offer we are therefore out as now.

The remainers will say "You were told you must not have no deal"
His reply will be all they had was already rejected.
It is the default position. An extension is already refused.
