Ineffective leadership in Australia has created a culture of weakness : Comments

By Tony Holmwood, published 27/5/2019

In Australia, our political system promotes all the wrong childhood, competitive behaviours like tactical play, groupthink, manipulating, and even backstabbing over our more mature adult behaviours.

The best Captain can't save his passengers if they're all useless at following instructions to save themselves !

Yes individual, that is so true.

One of the things I have done in my long a varied career was run boats in the Whitsundays. I used to run our largest boat, 146 passenger, 2 days a week to give the regular skipper his days off, & to get out of the office myself. I actually ended up running the company from the bridge of that boat 5 days a week, with a private radio frequency to my secretary in the office

This boat did the 3 Island Cruise, Daydream, South Mole & the Hook Island underwater observatory. The process at the observatory was somewhat messy, so I would spend some time explaining over the PA what would happen.

A fleet of glass bottom boats would pick up half our passengers, & take them to the observatory, then return to take the rest coral viewing. The boats would swap passengers after 40 minutes. Those at the observatory could walk across the headland, or wait for a boat to take them to the resort for lunch.

Invariably a dozen or 3 would come up after we stopped asking what happened now. To overcome this, I started to stop the boat just out from the mooring, to get the tourists attention, then explain the procedure. This made no difference to the "what now" questions.

I used to wonder if I would be any more successful getting the tourists off if the old thing started sinking.

Most of the tourists were great fun, but most had taken their brain out & left it on the kitchen table when they left home. That was OK, they were on holidays & entitled to stop thinking. However have many voters done the same?

Thanks for the comments people. To those who are unsure of Ei or emotional intelligence, it is essentially maturity (coming of age) and indicates a level of learning where we are able to draw on our human social right brain attributes which include being selfless, collaborative (sharing), employing trust and most importantly spatial awareness for vision and strategy. People who have not developed this level of capability or awareness would be unlikely to represent a long term growth strategy. This is pretty obvious in today's politicians. Their policies are typically transactional and more about financial management than growth.
