'Instagram Helped Kill My Daughter': censorship tendencies in social media : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 31/1/2019

Any time the censor steps in as defender of morality and safety citizens should be alarmed. Such attitudes are precisely the sorts of things that empty libraries and lead to the burning of books.

It's common for grieving parents - and what parent would not grieve the loss of a child - to blame everything and everyone for their loss, instead of considering the children themselves or, more to the point, their own parenting.

Just to be clear.

•Censorship is compaired to book burning and emptying libraries.
•Censoring sucidial material is bad because it includes censorship. Censorship of nudity is in the same light because it involves censorship.
•By allowing platformers the ability to censor their material, and even legislating for them to do it, it gives them more power over the information shared.

I think these are a few of the foundation points of the article. So let's look at them.

First I don't know of any libraries that have access to unrestrained information in book form. There's a self censorship in it that they choose which books line their shelves for no other reason then there's no space to have all the books in their building. Second, I don't know of any libraries that have a porn collection like an adult magazine store has to line their walls with. The Internet is a different beast then libraries. Libraries can be self managed.

Regarding censorship as bad on it's own without regard to the material being censored is crazy. Not long ago Facebook faced a similar issue because there were videos of people violently abusing and raping victims getting on and shared on it's platform. For however it got started and spread the videos were a disease for a group of violent people to trophy their acts and encourage other like minded people to get out there and do the same. Facebook did the deed of trying to remove this kind of content from their platform as soon as possible and to try and stop it from being shared. The question of whether to censor shouldn't be the issue. The issue should only be what to censor, and how much needs to be censored.

As for the platforms holding more power by invoking censorship. The power isn't really changing. They already own most of the information you share on their platform. By sharing it you give up rights and privacy to it. Platformers have for years included that as a clause in their agreement of service. The issue that has come up recently however is with them selling the information they take, in or having targeted news and fake news stories to try to sway a population. Essentially a problem is that platforms can be abused by either the platform company itself, or by other intentions who try to use the platform to manipulate a targeted group. Censorship doesn't add power to large companies. They already have it. All it does is attempts to manage the huge amount of information that comes into their social media site. Which is a needed function.

The issue shouldn't be whether to censor, but it should be what to censor, and how much.
