Because of the hodgepodge that US 'immigration' policy has become, there are massive advantages if an illegal alien turns up with a kid in tow. Remember the woman whose kid was photo shopped crying to Trump? She had three kids but only took one to help her gain access to the US.

If an adult turns up they are interned. In the past they were eventually let loose on the promise that they'd return for their asylum hearing later. They rarely did. Trump et al have tightened that and now lone adults will not be let loose.

But if that adult has a kid...
Well we can't lock up kids because they are innocent. So we have to let them loose. And if the kid's loose, how could we possibly notlet the mum out too? And what about dad? He's sooo important to the family's well-being. (this is probably the only time the left care's about father's rights)

So the kids are a shield that protects the illegals from incarceration and being deported. That's the meaning of the term that these authors have (deliberately?) misunderstood.

If only the parents of these kids were as concerned about their welfare as the US government is. It reminds one of the parents who took their kids on dangerous sea journeys to get to Australia without regard to their welfare.

A country can't exist without defendable borders - it just becomes a geographic location. Those who want the US to fail are in favour of open borders. The rest want secure borders.
