I agree with your first paragraph. However economic trouble is far from certain. One of the main reasons (probably THE main reason) why the Chinese Communist Party has managed to stay in power as long as it has is that they are competent macroeconomic managers. They recognise that recessions are never inevitable, and will always do what it takes to prevent one. Label it artificial if you want, but don't make the mistake of assuming that equates to unsustainable!

We do not want more nuclear weapons proliferation. And having a nuclear deterrent ourselves would have the exact opposite effect - we'd start to look like a threat to be neutralised.

As for fuel, it could easily be synthesised if necessary.
