What Moscow really needs now is an internationally-endorsed political settlement that preserves and rebuilds the Syrian state apparatus.

"The US has invaded Syria with significant military force, is occupying nearly 1/3 of its territory and is plundering the country's petroleum resources." quote by Stephen Gowans. Bereft of its petroleum resources and deprived of its best farmland, Syria will be hard-pressed to recover from the US led and US supported rebels war that has left it in ruins. Years ago on ABC RN I believe I heard the comment, if you interfere in a civil war, you prolong it. Why does the US, EU, UK, (Australia and Canada), want Assad to go whilst friends with Saudi Arabia one of the worst offenders of human rights.

Stephen Gowans has a book coming out about how the Korean patriots (Gowans means the Kim family of North Korean dictators here) are fighting the good fight for freedom of the Korean peoples.

I doubt that Gowans' opinion on what is happening in Syria is to be taken seriously. After all, Gowans' previous book about Syria was a panegyric to Bashar al-Assad's defense of socialism in Syria and the rest of the World.

Instead of viewing al-Assad and Kim as tin-pot dictators involved in hereditary power trips, Gowans sees them as heroes of the working class. In doing so, he is completely comfortable with cherry-picking sources in order to re-write history in his own preferred format.

As for Putin, I am guessing he has pretty much what he wants in Syria - chaos. This gives him the best chance to have his hands free elswhere.

Putin's major problem is that his strategy to enhance the power and prestige of the Russian Empire is based on the assumption that the US would continue to operate as it did under Obama. That is, it would talk loudly and carry a small stick.

With Obama around, Putin was able to consolidate his absorption of Georgia, take Crimea, take much of the Donbass, blackmail Europe over resources and take control of 20% of US uranium resources. Additionally Obama refused to arm Ukraine and cancelled missile defence systems for Eastern Europe while surreptitiously assuring Putin that he'd be even more compliant once those pesky elections were out of the way.

Because Obama shot his mouth of about red lines in Syria that he never had any intention of defending, he needed Putin to save his bacon and consequently invited Russia to take prime position in the conflict.

Between Obama's ineptitude and Hillary's corruption, Putin had a free hand wherever he sought to expand his power.

That changed on 20 January last year but Putin and, to be fair, most of the world failed to notice. Slowly the world is coming to a new understanding about how the USA will use its power.

China blinks in the so-called trade war. North Korea is anxious to parley. The Saudis are restructuring their society and are quietly treating with Israel. The Europeans are starting to meet their spending commitments on defence.

Its a new world and its moving in directions that don't suit Putin's strategy. Even on the economy, the US is uprooting the oil market which is the major source of Russian wealth.

Russia is a 3rd world country strategising to get 1st world prestige. Now that the adults are in charge of US foreign policy that ain't going to work.
