Should we step back from the marketing and data-mining phenomenon that is social media? : Comments

By Glen Anderson, published 26/3/2018

There have been recent accusations that a political data firm, Cambridge Analytica, used the Facebook profile information of millions of Americans to finesse Donald Trump’s 2016 Presidential victory.

In a study of 149 Canadian undergraduates, "participants who frequently texted, or used social media, were less likely to engage in reflective thought." What's more, they also "placed less emphasis on moral life goals," which suggests they haven't cultivated a sense of meaning that extends much beyond popularity.

But maybe social media attracts such shallow and narrow minded people.
In which case, avoid those people who wear the “mark of the beast” upon their smartphones!

While most millennials are fully aware that their data can be misused, virtually no one even bothers to make their pages private. The reality is that most people don't care and those that do put measures in place or restrict what they put on the net.

Being GenX neither I nor my contacts swamp their pages with trivia, nor put anything up that we would wish taken down later. I find it a useful tool.

Yes indeed. Get your life back and make it more private.

DELETE your Facebook AND Twitter accounts today.

OR do you want to be exploited and your private writings recorded by American multinationals?

The more Australians that have accounts with them the more those companies can manipulate AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.

Never been there, never done that, don't have the T shirt, & have no desire for any of the above.

It is interesting that here is suggested excuse number 5 thousand 2 hundred & fifty three, of why the best man won, & the worst woman lost the US election. I wonder if they will ever stop.

A suggestion that all social media accounts should be removed is not viable as people have to use them for work. If you aren't planning toto lose your job you just can't afford being unsociable.

Advertising firms and governments have always had access to what people are buying
and what they are spending money on. Long before the internet.

They always kept stats on it, although at that stage not on computers.
Computers just multiply the availability of more numerous customers.

Hasbeen has it right, this is just another attempt by the left wing globalists, to promote the idea that people were somehow brainwashed into voting for Trump and cant possibly be smart enough to think for themselves.

As if the Democrats(leftists) in the American ekections werent up to their necks ,mining through all sorts of data and information to get dirt on Trump.
