Why is North Korea doing this? : Comments

By Chris Lloyd, published 2/10/2017

The key missing element is a plausible account of the motives of North Korea (NK), specifically their leader Kim Jong Un (KJU).

North Korea has been under sanctions for so long, the idea of being recoginizedcas a nuclular power and be free of sanctions, as well as more economic freedom slunes like a likely part of the equasion.

That said I doubt that is all there is. I don't want to trust his motives to be purely for that cause, and then find out whoops no he really hates everyone he's targeting, and war is definitely on.

There may be little to trust on these issues. It looks like North Korea and the US are going to force eachother's hands on their real motives, or challenge them until it becomes a war.

What difference does it make how anyone sees the issue if they aren't in control of it and the ones in control to fight or to fight back have already descided regardless our opinions of it are.

Why? I don't know why!

A rational Leader, would have done an East Germany? Long long ago! And reunited divided families and a rent asunder war torn country. [Mr president, tear down that wall.]

This is what we can expect, when a brainwashed child grows into an adult, believing BS, fact free, state sponsored propaganda!

Me? I'd give him nuclear power as, [nothing to fear here,] operational walk away safe, thorium based molten salt reactors. And for democratic elections they don't ever walk away from! And power sharing arrangements, with a more prosperous southern half!

Failing that?

Do what we should have done! When Mr Hitler stole power and before he plunged the rest of the world into a war that cost millions of lives. Monumentally massive destroyed property and incomes!

Just take him out! With as much pity as one would when euthanizing, a rabid, disease riddled, seriously savage, alpha werewolf. And as a surgical removal?

Failing that? Plan B? With any and all means, whatever it takes! That gets the job done!

Preferably before the world is forced over the brink of destruction!

A show of ruthless resolve, here and now, may well give other leaders cause to pause, reflect and choose a different more cooperative, single planet, peaceful pathway?

Or? Just bend over and kiss your kester goodbye?

The author hasn't done enough reading:

All three leaders of the Kim dynasty have justified their control over their people and high defence/security spending to deter invasion.

North Korea needs its nukes to prevent being invaded or attacked by aircraft and missiles. North Korea has been invaded over the last 80 years by nations including: Japan, China (a literal invasion), Russia, and under the UN/Korean War (the US, UK, Australia, South Korea etc).

Dictatorship is a balancing act.

A dictator must always be on guard that no other body is too strong.

In the case of KJU, the regular army is too strong, so he wants to reduce it in size. But he has no other excuse to reduce his army and if his conventional guns are no longer so massively targeting Seoul, then NK would be more exposed to an external invasion.

A white-collar elite of rocket and nuclear scientists is not as threatening to a dictator as those in control of tanks and fighter-jets, so KJU wants to tell the army: "Our rockets have made us safe, now we can finally afford to reduce the army's size in order to improve the economy" (the economy of course, is only a pretext).

They do it because, in the past, people like Obama have given them something to appease them. The thicko Rocket Man doesn't yet know that Trump is a very different man who will actually fight enemies of the West.

The little rocket man with the funny hairstyle is a whole lot smarter than the big fat rocket man with the road kill on his head will ever be.

ateday,

How did you arrive at that conclusion? There is no obvious evidence to support your claim.

Because the little rocket man knows what he is doing as opposed to the the big fat rocket man who doesn`t have a clue and is interested in nothing but himself and his hairstyle.

So, not reason at all: you are just being childish about a very serious problem. Bringing up someone's appearance (Trump's) and hair do does not make you a person whose opinions will ever be taken seriously.

Hair, hair, ttbn and well said!

Q: What did the toupe say to the skull?
A: Hair today, gone tomorrow?

Q: What did KJU say to his older murdered brother?
A: heir today, gone tomorrow?

Small story. The rabbit and the hare were having dew hop in party. When in the course of conversation the rabbit complained, I washed my hair this morning and now I can't do a thing with it!

You think you've got troubles, replied the hare, I washed my thing this morning and now I can't do a blankety blank with it!

I'm not surprised the authors completely clueless on this topic.
It seems he believes all the news he's told, I think that's the problem here, and it would just take too long to set his mind straight.

ttbn,
Trump isn't running the show, though the egotistical delusional fool probably thinks he is.
General Kelly is managing the intel Trump's getting, they give him the info they want him to have and push him in the direction they wanted to go all along.
Probably Neoconservative / Pro Israel / Hate Russia agenda's I suppose

I know you're pro Israel so your probably more tolerant of his foreign policy than I but I wont support any of the Americas dirty proxy wars for the benefit of US or Israeli imperialism.

I've read Zionist Plan for the Middle East and I know Israels agendas.
Start wars of aggression and scream Holocaust, Nazi so people look the other way, claim they are the victim.
Right now it's Syria Plan B - carve off the eastern part of Syria, give to the Kurds (it's advertised on their bloody flag) in order to stop a Shia cresent from Iran to Lebanon.

I don't support IS, or other armed Jihadi's for political agendas - I support Assad killing them.
Did anyone else hear that Russia formally accused US of working in concert with Islamic State last week?

Very well-written and insightful article.

However, the risk vs benefit of developing nuclear weapons in defiance of international sanctions just to satisfy one's own ego is implausible.

North Korea and the USA very recently made plans for talks. Sure, these talks are somewhat back-channel, and the US diplomats aren't official, but the fact is that this is a victory for North Korean regime, despite the media's suggestion that the talks are a result of Trump's tough rhetoric.

It's quite plausible that North Korea’s nuclear scheme is intended to be used as leverage against a US/NATO invasion, however, the impoverished nation is most likely trying to bring Western powers and the UN to the table to initiate talks. Here’s why:

- If the regime comes to the table currently, without the capability to strike the USA, they would have to give up their missile/nuclear program in exchange for removal of sanctions. The Korean people have been force-fed the belief that the exchange of their basic human rights is worth the reward – nuclear missiles capable of reaching the USA. Remove that outcome, and see the regime collapse.

- If the regime develops weapons capable of inflicting significant harm on mainland USA, they have leverage against the USA. Now the USA comes to the table on Korea’s terms, and the outcome is either an invasion of North Korea, which will be accompanied by significant US civilian losses, or the USA will accept North Korea as a legitimate nuclear power and slowly remove sanctions. This is what Kim and his boys want.

rewind :

" Then in mid-1941, Japan signed a Neutrality Pact with the Soviet Union, making it clear that Japan’s military would be moving into Southeast Asia, where the United States had greater interests. A third agreement with Vichy France enabled Japanese forces to move into Indochina and begin their Southern Advance. The United States responded to this growing threat by temporarily halting negotiations with Japanese diplomats, instituting a full embargo on exports to Japan, freezing Japanese assets in U.S. banks, and sending supplies into China along the Burma Road. Although negotiations restarted after the United States increasingly enforced an embargo against Japan, they made little headway.

Faced with serious shortages as a result of the embargo, unable to retreat, and convinced that the U.S. officials opposed further negotiations, Japan’s leaders came to the conclusion that they had to act swiftly. For their part, U.S. leaders had not given up on a negotiated settlement, and also doubted that Japan had the military strength to attack the U.S. territory. Therefore they were stunned when the unthinkable happened and Japanese planes bombed the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941."

Apparently it has been a long held wish for the Kim dynasty to reunite Korea, and reunite it under the control of the Kims.
Considering it will double the amount of people KJU can lord over, it seems quite an understandable goal.
