How soft on people's feelings should the law become? : Comments

By John de Meyrick, published 4/9/2017

Although 18C was opposed by the Coalition when it was introduced by the Keating Government in 1994, it remained a ‘sleeper’ until recent events.

Sheep stealing is on the rise again in South Australia. Tough times and the high price of meat are said to be the cause. SAPOL isn't capable of catching them, let alone prosecuting them.

I'm not wading through this just to read “ 18c must go” in the last sentence. We know it. It has been chewed to pieces. Australian politicians are not going to do anything about it. We are stuck with it.

Just be careful to stick with your own kind in multicultural Australia. And, here's a tip. You can usually find out all that has been written by reading the first and last sentences of an article. Everything between has been done to death many, many times over.

A very very long and wordy diatribe, trying to justify fixing what ain't broke?

And like most anti SSM's, (his form) I believe, wants the freedom to unleash a torrent of hate speech? Before the "plebiscite", or the next poll that actually counts! Delivers the will of the people and with an extra 100,000 voters enrolled and willing to cast a formal ballot!

Report card.
A for effort!
F for persuasive argument/reasoned logic!

with the offensive lies and garbage that Triggs told the Australian public maybe it should stay. I wonder what reward the Labour party has in stall for her.

But it is 'broke' Allen B. In the 60s-70s 1000s of people went on the streets to defend freedom of opinion against the Bjelke-Petersen's of the world. The ALP was firmly behind the demos and political action to embed that right. People were beaten up by thugs for their beliefs on a regular basis. Today, those very same people are considered to be dangerous and misguided by those intent on closing down discussion and debate. Australia has gone soft on real political expression as this article shows.

Debrata Sen Sharma, writing on Hindu ethics, advocates that we should be “abstaining from violence in any form and should refrain from causing injury to any one through deed, word or thought” (2016) . If we combine Hindu ethics along with Buddhism, the Jains and those of the Western moral theories ,it is quite clear that an overriding moral theory tells us, and has for thousands of years , that we should not insult anybody. 18C should stand

This opinion piece is not only wrong, but it is excessively long

Nova986,

Well said.

However the faux-left 'Progressives' have hijacked Labor.
