Social Justice Warriors and the Taliban : Comments

By Gregory Melleuish, published 6/6/2017

As with multiculturalism, diversity does not seem to include the possibility of syncretism or the evolution of new forms of culture out of existing forms.

I agree with Aidan. Although there are (perhaps) some good points in this essay, it is entirely a straw-man argument to equate the multi-faceted SJ movement with the Taliban.

Interesting that Greg calls or FRAMES the SJ movement as "warriors" with its negative conotations. Especially as Greg himself is a well known member of the Quadrant/Spectator/Australian culture wars (warriors) nexus.

And there is no resonance whatsover with the work of Wendy Doniger and whatever real or imagined negative effects that the SJ movement. has. Doniger is a well known scholar of the multi-various ESOTERIC Hindu religion (and metaphysics), and its relation to Indian culture altogether. By contrast the kind of exoteric religion (religiosity) that Greg promotes has no esoteric or metaphysical dimensions to it. The religion that he promotes is entirely an extension of, and a consolation for the social ego (in its mortal fear). It is about the external features of religion as a very worldly institutional phenomenon - such religion contains, and even enforces all kinds of taboos against anyone become "too mystical" or metaphysical.

Speaking of taliban style applied politics it is more likely to be found in the southern states of the USA. And in the kind of applied politics that Mike Pence advocates and practiced why he was a state governor, and which he is more than likely going to attempt as the veep, and even more so if he becomes the USA President.
Re the possibilities of a taliban style politics in the USA why not do a search on the topic of Mike Pence and the Hand Maiden's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Thank you Gregory for this good and interesting comparison.

Dear Is Mise,

Radical Islam is Godless even if its carriers delude themselves otherwise.

Dear Daffy,

This article looks good to me. I don't know the author and what he promotes in his spare time - you may be right concerning his spiritual shallowness, but none of that is apparent from this specific article.

Not a bad summary yuyutsu, thank you.

I should also have said: agreed Yuyutsu, and thank you.

As somebody who has studied psychology, Greg, could I explain something to you?

A not insignificant minority of any society have what psychologists call "absolutist" mindsets. That means that they can only see things in black and white. 50 shades of grey have no meaning to them. Something is either absolutely right or absolutely wrong. Such people are drawn to absolutist ideologies where a very clear and permanent demarcation between right and wrong exists. They make very good religious nutcases and fanatics of every stripe and colour.

They take perfectly good concepts such as a healthy diet, kindness to animals, and exercise, and take them to the most crazy extremes. The idea that to take any virtue to it's extreme and it will turn into a vice never occurs to them. Moral quandaries and moral priorities have no meaning to them. The idea that the best course of action may be to take the lesser evil, has no meaning to them. Nothing less than total adherence to a virtuous extreme will satisfy them.

These people are interesting because they tend to become leaders in all sorts of causes. They are completely fanatical and they will band together within any organisation to get rid of moderates who have a more balanced view of life. Every organisation over time usually becomes more extreme and/or more corrupt until it becomes a the opposite of what it claimed to be. Look at Gillian Triggs and the so called Human Rights Lobby, an organisation pledged to fight racism and defend freedom of speech, who persecuted university students who dared to write complaining about anti white racism within QUT.

Most revolutionary movements which advocate the highest ideals eventually become the absolute dictatorships they once decried. The SJ warriors are in decay and everybody can see their contradictions. How do Feminists defend Islam? Young people today are turning away from these crazies because they can see that they are nutcases. But sooner or later they will return in another form. Just look at how the morally bankrupt Communist Party of Australia reinvented itself as The Greens.
