Time for Australian Macedonian community to intensify its foreign policy battle : Comments

By Ordan Andreevski, published 6/9/2016

Australia should not allow the Hellenic Republic and its lobbyists in Australia to hold its foreign policy on Macedonia hostage to discredited ultra-nationalist politics from the 19th century.

Ordan if this is the biggest problem in your life, then life is good. Have a cup of tea and a bit of a lie down, it's just a name mate.

"Recognising the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name will deliver the following benefits to Australia:

Help maintain a positive security and strategic environment in Europe and beyond.
Open trade, investment and economic co-operation with the region.
Contribute to regional and global security."

All democratic progressive forces in Moscow and Canberra will defend Greece to the death. Down with the tyrant Alexander the "Great"- what's great about an armoured cavalry blitzkrieg into the peaceful and co-operative lands of Babylon and Persia and India? Crush Macedonia and its ruthless head-lock on European open trade and global security. Support Britain's struggle for freedom!

You mean the Former Yugoslavian Republic Of Macedonia, right?
Who's inhabitants are composed of predominantly Slavs and Albanians, yeah?
The same nation that speaks a Slavic dialect, like their Serbian and Croatian neighbours?
Who's people can't read ANY of the writings from ancient Macedonia, because the ancient Macedonians wrote and spoke ancient Greek, yet claim to be descendants of the ancient Macedonians?
Oh, THAT 'nation'. Save your energy. With any luck, when Albania absorbs them in about 20-30 years, they might allow them to be called 'The Macedonian Province Of Greater Albania'.
Regardless, it STILL won't make them Macedonians though lol

There's a French one starting up . The Former Territory of Neolithic Gauls and Greek-Phoenicians of Roman Visigoths and Burgundians with Franks ( and occasional Nazi stormtroopers) and Libyans with Suicide Trucks and Chinese banks no Burkinis.

TruthHurtsGetOverIt,
Of course! There's only one Republic of Macedonia, and it was part of the former Yugoslavia. But calling it "The Former Yuguslave Republic Of Macedonia" not only wastes time conveying redundant information, but is just too tedious and inconvenient. And using the abbreviation FYROM is unacceptable because it's possible to pronounce it as "firearm".

There's nothing wrong with calling it the Republic of Macedonia. Just as there's nothing wrong with referring to the Republic of Ireland, Republic of Korea and Republic of Congo which don't occupy the entire geographical region of that name.

The Ancient Greeks declared that region to be part of Macedonia, and the vast majority of the people there today are descended from those ancient Greeks. That they have more ancestors from elsewhere does not diminish that important fact: they are Macedonians. Although as there are also lots of Macedonians from Greek Macedonia, I think it would be sensible to refer to those from the Republic of Macedonia as North Macedonians.

"Time" for the "Macedonian/Australians" to decide whether they are "Australians" or "Macedonians."
