"Be this as it may, we can be sure that there is yet time for another nutter to appear in her place."
Everard Compton himself is my idea of a "nutter" (his own description of perfectly normal people whose views he doesn't like). Perhaps he is thinking about 'standing'. Why do we have to be subjected to the rantings of a senile 85 year old? As for Trump - of no concern to us or this old fool, Compton - he must be like a breath of fresh air to Americans after the Islamo/Communist, Obama. When, oh when, are we going to get a political candidate who will follow the sort of simple, prudent, well-thought policies that the people want?
A simple four point plan would be as follows: 1. Treble Government expenditure. 2. Abolish ALL taxation, with any deficiency in finances being made up from the sale of politicians' assets. 3. Balance the budget. 4. Pay off the national debt. Any candidate who can prove that he can and will do this would be sure of election. Posted by plerdsus, Thursday, 4 February 2016 10:45:30 AM

In a nation that has the very best democracy money can buy. Trump just hasn't got enough money, nor are there enough people who share his loony tune ideas for him to ever become president?
On second thoughts, perfectly intelligent Germans voted Herr Hitler into office, and on the back of populous catch phrases and blatant racism. I don't know who Trump would nuke first, those pesky south americans, you know the one who do all the harvesting for the yanks and look after their kids Or ISIS. For mine he's just a little bit too right wing, as for his wealth. He's always been master at using people who are smarter than he is. Come election time however, it will be America's turn to say, you're fired! Rhrosty. Posted by Rhrosty, Thursday, 4 February 2016 11:02:42 AM

The same fools in Fairfax who say Abbott is to old and should go are backing Hilary. She is far more extreme than Trump.

For heavens sake Everald, the US currently has it's worst ever president right now. About the only thing worse would be to follow this most useless of people, with a proven liar & incompetent in Hillary.
Trump may not be the best choice of president, but he is by far he best choice from those likely to have any chance of election. Of course we can't talk. We were stupid enough to elect Rudd, then Gillard, [well sort of elected Gillard], & now we have a Rudd look alike in Turnbull. Electing Turnbull here would be about as stupid as the yanks electing Hillary. That both may happed is proof that western civilisation is in it's "mobs of Rome" stage, & will shortly collapse. With what it has become in the handout welfare state era, that is not all that bad a thing. Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 4 February 2016 11:18:12 AM

Worst ever, Hasbeen?
I suppose you think Turnbull's our worst ever PM too. But as with Turnbull, Obama may be a disappointment but most people find him far preferable to the guy he replaced. _____________________________________________________________________________________ runner, in what way is Mrs Clinton any more extreme than Trump? Mrs Clinton gets people killed, then lies about it. She has also failed at everything she has done.
She's a loser, even in marriage. Trump is a winner. No I don't think Turnbull is the worst PM we have ever had, he is probably in a tie between Bully McMahon, Fraser, Rudd & Gillard. Still if it came to a test the best liars would be Rudd & Turnbull, both do it with a disarming smile, & a look of sincerity. He is however probably the most dangerous. The world in general, & Oz in particular, are running out of luck. We can't afford a bumbling buffoon Like Turnbull. He is about as competent as that other Buffoon, we had up here, Beattie. He grinned like Alice's Cheshire cat, as he destroyed our Queensland economy. Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 4 February 2016 1:06:19 PM

I woke up to the fact that Bernie Sanders was likely to be active in the POTUS race when Dr Stephanie Kelton took two years leave of absence, in January 2015, from her position as Chair (= Dean), Economic Department at the Univ. Of Missouri, Kanses City, to become Bernie's adviser on economic matters.
Dr Kelton is one of the world's best theoreticians and communicators on economic matters. One of her best articles is at; http://www.fields.utoronto.ca/video-archive/2013/11/221-2524 Posted by Foyle, Thursday, 4 February 2016 1:28:28 PM

Trump is a good man, solid, shrewd, putting fear in enemies of the people.
Trump (with German blood) may stand somewhere between Reagan and der Führer. Funnily enough, if Hillary fails, then Bernie Sanders, born of a Jewish family, may be the man to face Trump in the election. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Sanders#Early_life.2C_education.2C_and_family __________________________________________________________________ Hasbeen Turnbull is an election winner over Shorten. Winning elections being the No.1 goal in politics. And hasn't Turnbull appointed wet-pet David Morrison as the unofficial "Minister for Diversity"? That way Morrison, like a Decoy Duck, cops all the conservative flak, while Turnbull can have a foot each in almost-conservative and centrist camps. It won't matter who wins the US election, here is what governments in the west have in store for us all:

Hi Plerdsus,
You may have hit upon a sure-fire political agenda - treble government expenditure, and abolish all taxation. Obviously - that makes sense even to a small child, if to nobody else. The next parts would be easy: balance the budget and pay off the national debt. Piece of cake. That takes us up to about 2019. What next ? Back to the real world. Really, has anybody taken Trump seriously ? Or is it possible that he's been a sort of stalking horse for a more centrist candidate, by drawing another fruit-cake, Cruz, further to the Right ? Meanwhile, old Clinton and old Sanders fight over the left. The best fruit is usually in the middle of the tree, it' what pickers leave until last. Here's my bet: a possibly-three-way fight between Rubio versus a yet-unknown Democrat or Independent candidate, perhaps Cory Booker and/or Michael Bloomberg. Three centrists, three fairly civil blokes: an Hispanic, an African-American and a Jewish bloke. This could get interesting. Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Thursday, 4 February 2016 3:07:14 PM

Boring Boring Boring !
And the ABC is gearing up to again bore us stiff for the next 10 months with a parade about selecting an undertaker to wind up the US as it goes down the financial gurgler. The declining purchasing value of the average wage is producing an internal revolution in the US and the $18 trillion debt will quite soon blow up in their face and will no doubt spray us with shrapnel and whatever comes off the fan. Hi Joe
If the American electorate is sane, then Marco Rubio https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Rubio looks a decent pick. He packs considerable political, business and academic experience into just a 44 year old. This is noting JFK was only 43 when becoming Pres. Rubio from Florida (especially Miami) is from one of those neither northern nor "southern" States - and so has broader electoral appeal. The US typically swings 8 years of Democrat (Obama) to the Republican (like Rubio) alternative. If Rubio can move some of his conservative policies to the center (like Reagan managed) then he may be good. Pete Posted by plantagenet, Thursday, 4 February 2016 3:36:10 PM

Can we belive this bloke you refer us to. The "the faked terror attacks"? Don't think so.
"The privatization of the US prison system has resulted in huge numbers of innocent people being sent to prison..."? Again: pretty unbelievable Posted by ttbn, Thursday, 4 February 2016 4:36:42 PM

Rumours that Julian Assange, Aussie passport in hand, will be winging his way to Australia by Sunday http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-04/julian-assange-to-'accept-arrest'-if-unsuccessful-in-appeal/7140472
may happen. Posted by plantagenet, Thursday, 4 February 2016 7:32:25 PM

The banking elites who promote war for profit hate Trump because he wants not the destruction of the USA but it to rise again. The banking elites want a one world Govt called The New World Order and you don't get a vote.Trump will be the USA Hitler but Bernie Sanders is no solution either,
A bit too late by Trump as I think these lunatics will in a hissy fit, bring on WW3 with Russia and China.NATO is currently positioning more nukes close to Russia. Posted by Arjay, Thursday, 4 February 2016 9:00:18 PM

The only thing worse than Trump winning would be Clinton. Rubio is now loathed in his homestate.
Personally I am going for Trump. This will unite the entire world in loathing the US, the only time the entire world has come together :) Sanders wins accolades for being the first atheist to get this far and would be my vote, if I had such a thing... Unfortunately I think Mr Compton's speculation is correct. Posted by Valley Guy, Thursday, 4 February 2016 10:05:40 PM

The bumbling old hairy Trump will fade off into political oblivion along with other fools like Clive Palmer who think they are important because they have money, and will parrot what the rednecks want to hear.
Luckily, there are not quite enough mad rednecks in the US to get Trump over the line at the end of the day, so all his sad supporters will just have to pack up their pointy white hats and mosey on home defeated. Posted by Suseonline, Thursday, 4 February 2016 10:06:35 PM

It's the centre, stupid.
Rubio vs Booker vs Bloomberg. It's possible. Hi Pete, Why do all the rednecks keep picking on Assange ? The man's an obvious genius, he's done so much for the world, and surely there are some people who should be immune from such trivial charges as sexual assault and rape [on Swedish girls, for god's sake], and allowed to keep doing their good works. Cheers, Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Friday, 5 February 2016 9:50:27 AM

Geoff,
Yes? Still no explanation about 'faked' terror attacks or why there are more people in prison JUST because of privitisation (as he claims). Are you familiar with this journalist and his reputation? Seems to be a bit of a Pilger to me. And, The Guardian, the leftiest publication ever, putting the boot into the Left Obama government? Both arrticles are a bit fishy to me. Thanks anyway. Hi Joe
You're right. Assange, being above the law that governs us mere mortals, has now managed to make himself a UN cause. This certainly boosts the UN's credibility. That Assange is suspected of violence against woman just makes him all the more sexy to his world-wide bevy of well heeled woman. Like 15 year old girls they like a rebel with a name. To do these woman justice, I'm confident they have been silent about their sisters in Cologne being raped by admirable, of "North African and Arabic appearance" M__, M__, I can't get it out! "Migrants". there Posted by plantagenet, Friday, 5 February 2016 12:02:41 PM

The wacky UN's support of Assange is another nail in the coffin of its credibility.

No barrow to push here but for the sake of correct info, Assange is
not charged with violence as the sex was consensual. The reason for the charge is that he did not use a condom. Apparently there is a twist in Swedish law about that. That is all I know about it. Posted by Bazz, Friday, 5 February 2016 4:07:16 PM

"bore", "a dangerous born again Christian" and so on.
Trump, according to Everald, "has no ability whatsoever to become President of the United States". Perhaps. But he has had sufficient ability to become a billionaire, so he has some skills and is, as Everald says, "a very cunning promoter of himself." Seems like a good start for a presidential candidate.
Instead, Everald predicts Hillary Clinton will become president, which is odd considering that she would appear to be criminally stupid in sending top secret information on unsecured email servers and may yet face charges.
And her opponent for the presidency, whoever it might be, must be delighted that her culpability for the Benghazi catastrophe has barely been mentioned in the campaign so far.
I'd have thought that these matters would indicate that she "has no ability to become President of the United States". But, of course, there are many other issues for which the Clintons should be scrutinised, including their off-shore fund-raising.
