By Pete Mulherin, published 5/1/2016

The Islamic State was never going to be a conventional army for long, considering the overwhelming firepower facing it.

Elements within Saudi Arabia will continue to fund groups like ISIS as it works towards its geopolitical goals.
Interesting to see the US twist itself into knots to condemn Iran and support Saudi Arabia.
There isn't much daylight between ISIS and Saudi Arabia.

We need to make better use of completely covert unbeatable space age lie detection, at our borders, as this misguided rabble seeks entry, so as to maximise the harm they might do.

Better properly supported by ultra reliable space age technology/border control will end that possibility.

Consummate liars may be able o beat a polygraph test, but no amount of training can prevent critical areas the brain lighting up even were a polygraph beating pathological liar tells bare faced pork pies!

Nor can they prevent the tell tale expression change that always accompany lies or deception. that are simply too fast for the human eye, even the most experienced to detect.

Not so for computer assisted facial recognition technology.

The fact that some of these folk are slipping in, assisted by fake passports and so on, means that some official we know best elitist intransigent recalcitrant egos are just getting in the way? And preventing best practise border control?

Seriously, they are never ever going to be allowed to win where they are now, even if that means turning the desert sands into a sea of molten glass.

And as we expose these folk and their hidden agendas at the entry points, send them to places like devil's Island for the term of their natural lives.

And where they will need to be self supporting in every sense of the word. Perhaps supported by a few critical air drops?

They want a caliphate, let's give them one of their very own, and appropriately named given those we would send there are Satan's servants.

Islam needs to be understood as a handy IS recruiting tool.

In the end Ramadi may be retaken within 12 months as this is a shifting pendulum war. The Shiite dominated Iraqi Government+militias may so alienate Sunni majority residents of Ramadi that these residents facilitate the return of IS to the city.

Seems the Iraqi Army is taking ground in Ramadi after air bombardments have made this possible. I wouldn't expect much of any long term performance of the Iraqi Army or Shiite militias.

It may not be the Western aerial bombardment of IS in Iraq is the real reason IS left Ramadi. It may be Russia's airstrikes against the IS+Turkish oil trade that is strangling IS's revenue base which has been the main funder of IS ability to wage conventional war.

Funding to IS from Sunni (Gulf) countries/individuals may also be in decline due to combined Western/Chinese and Russian pressure on the Gulf countries and lower oil revenue to the Gulf.

Whilst Rhrostys' recommendations are worthy, why not ensure ONLY the most persecuted people from Syria (Druze, Yazidis, Christians and similar recognisable minorities) are given access to Australian immigration. These groups will NEVER be able to safely return to a reconstructed state. Sunnis and shia have a variety of alternative relocation options in the Middle East.

Some very valid points as of course this whole debate is fundamentally about an ideology, their created state a product of that. First it was Afghanistan, now Syria, ideology can move and it has not gone away.

The Saudis have promoted their Wahhabi Islam with impunity around the world, yet it shares many common denominators with radical Islam. Few politicians will touch that one.

Yes, Islam and what Muslims believe should be studied and openly discussed, but of course this cannot happen in Islamic countries, for fear of death for blasphemy. So no free debate is possible in any Muslim country that I am aware of. So Islam keeps growing.
