By Murray Hunter, published 31/12/2015

Today intra-ASEAN trade is approximately 25% of total trade, growing around 10.5% per annum, and expected to reach 30% of total ASEAN tradeby the year 2020.

The really important question for me is: Who's success? Will the AEC eventually become a repeat of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere of 1940-5 but this time under the hegemony of an increasingly aggressive and expansionist China. A few more engineered islands into the South China Sea and China will be able to claim all of the AEC as part of its economic zone. And, unfortunately for us, I think China has already made up its mind to include Australia as a part of it. And, worse still, I think Australia's politicians and business leaders have also made up their minds to include Australia as a part of it

Mr Opinion, a Chinese spokesman pointed out that Chinese are the
largest group of migrants to Australia.
Our real estate agents are flat out helping.

There seems to be rush to Asia by commercial interests regardless of
whether it is in other interests of Australia.
It has all the hallmarks of uninhibited immigration of previous years.
Much of the public impression of Asia and Australia is based on the
schoolroom wall Mercadors projection of the world.
Asia is on the other side of the world when you use realistic maps.

Mercador was a Dutchman with European trading interests.
An Australian Mercador would never produce such a map.

Hi Bazz,

I would like to be a fly on the wall of the meeting room of the Chinese Communist Party. China has already claimed that it has a greater right to the Australian continent than the Anglo-Australians have. I think China will want to see a much larger Chinese populace in Australia before making any demands for parts of Australia to be ceded to China. I think Port Darwin and Christmas Island will be the first two places to go to China.

But getting back to this topic: I think the AEC will be a success - for China! I think it will become part of a Chinese global empire. Unless other countries act now to halt China from expanding into SE Asia. But I doubt that will happen. I have an image of Malcolm Turnbull standing at the doors of a plane holding a piece of paper over his head and saying 'I have a written guarantee from China's President that it has no more claims over Australian territory'. I suppose it's only then that the alarm bells will starting ringing.
