Mythology is killing the solutions to domestic violence : Comments

Giving a man whose trauma has not been treated 'anger management' is like putting a band-aid on a septic wound and saying 'all better!'

Thanks; very interesting, particularly the bit about 'irreconcilable breach of trust forcing them to create controllable outcomes'.

I don't know the research in this area, but I have been musing lately on how many of our social problems stem from individuals' lack of self-control. Aspects of modern society are pre-disposing us to consider our own interests all the time, and the neglect community and group interests, causing people to ignore the necessity for self-control.

But if perpetrators have a need to create a controllable situation, an apparent lack of self-control may be more of a reflex survival mechanism, and less like lack of self-discipline.

I am almost speechless.
;0

Firstly I thought it would be one of those articles claiming that Men's Rights groups were creating Myths, but on reading the article to find that it is more accurate about other myths that continually block solutions to resolving DV.

Erin Pizzey first wrote about this in her book Prone to Violence. Then she wrote a discussion paper on working with violent women.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/glenn-sacks/researcher-says-womens-in_b_222746.html?ir=Australia

<Dr. Capaldi notes that in a study of women who were in a battered women's shelter, "67% of the women reported severe violence toward their partner in the past year." Others in the domestic violence field, including Erin Pizzey, founder of the first battered women's shelter in England in the early 1970s, have had similar findings.>

Sadly I believe that some groups have a vested interested in continually perpetrating these myths.

It was Ullrich Ecker of the School of Psychology, University of Western Australia who spoke about the persistence of misinformation. He said "Information that is initially accepted as valid but is later found to be incorrect can have a persistent influence on people’s memory and reasoning".

We have seen much of this in the domestic violence "industry".

One example that springs to mind is the claim that two women die each week as a result of domestic violence. That was first stated way back at the start of the year and has been repeated ever since by Rosie Batty (it's on her website), by ABC Radio and TV (Leigh Sales has reported that inaccuracy on the 7.30 Report), by numerous commentators and dozens of politicians all the way to the top, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

But it's simply not true. The Australian Institute of Criminology figures reveal that, over a ten year period, an average of 48 women per year are killed by an intimate partner. And even if you ignore the statistics, you only need consider that this is week 45 and there are nowhere near ninety women who have been killed by an intimate partner, or even by a family member, or even by a stranger. This is so far off the mark to be ludicrous.

Journalist Miranda Devine wrote the following;

“Campaigns such as Destroy the Joint’s Counting Women project insist on making domestic violence a gender issue. It claims 76 women are victims this year, with the implication these are all “intimate partner” homicides, perpetrated by males.

In fact, only about half of the homicides cited could be classified as having a male partner or ex-partner identified as the killer.

Some of the 76 victims were killed by women, by sisters, daughters, a female neighbour or, in one case, a female ex-lover of the victim’s husband, as well as by brothers, fathers, and sons, strangers, acquaintances and persons unknown. Domestic violence is serious enough without exaggerating”.

But the misinformation persists . . .

Philip Howell, the research in this area is almost non existent. "but I have been musing lately on how many of our social problems stem from individuals' lack of self-control. it is both, antisocial, antifamily & anticommunity ideas have been promoted for half a century now, so everybody has less self control, is more easily offended. Mental health rates are higher, as well.

Wolly B, are you familiar with Patterson's law of social work? "the number of social workers in a community always grows to match the social problems they create".

DVAMA, "repeat the big lie, until it becomes the truth" Lenin the antisocialist.

the really sad part is this article had to be written by a woman. if a man had been the author he would not have been believed despite the facts on offer.

the other sad part is this woman is allowed to work in this field. men are not allowed to work with women in this field because the women allegedly feel unsafe dealing with any male, yet male victims are routinely forced to deal with female counselors & social workers.

At my local Men's Shed feminist social workers invade our space whenever they like & lecture us about entering the neighbourhood centre, double standards extraordinaire.

This is just another social worker writing an article to get more money for his department.

Most people would regard the idea of men being the victims of domestic violence with mirth.

The best way to prevent domestic violence against women from rising in Australia, is to stop importing Muslims into Australia, something that this author saw fit not to mention. The Muslim majority Sydney suburb of Auburn is the domestic violence capitol of Australia. Hardly surprising, when it is remembered that wife beating is officially sanctioned in the Koran.

The other main offenders for domestic violence are aboriginal men. But you won't hear this author say that either. Minorities are above reproach in the world of the social worker, Don't mention the war.

We can't do much about the existence of aboriginals in Australia, but we sure as hell can stop importing Muslims into this country to stop things getting worse.

LEGO, did you know that only 20% of DV involves married hetero couples. 80% is de-facto couples. GLBT marriage would shift the worst DV stats from de-facto over to married. Giving the SJW social workers another reason to claim the need for progress by ending marriage & the family all together.

There is a wonderful book of fiction, written by a SF writer (I can't remember who?).

Basically the book was about a wealthy man who got injured and wound living in an area somewhere similar to the Bronks and how the Social Workers tired to put him into a box that he refused to fit into.

It provided a fascinating insight into S/W's.

It would be good if Jasmin got this published in the Conversation website which is mostly a feminist supported website on sociological subjects.

For too long we have accepted the narrative that only women suffer as victims of domestic violence.

Batty & co have ensured that we continue to proceed in a backward direction. The current politically correct approaches to domestic violence will see more children suffer and more - not less - family dysfunction.

The answer to domestic violence is for both men AND women to learn to deal with each other respectfully.

Rogindon, I would suggest that Rosie Batty is very painfully aware that both males (her son) and children are very much victims of domestic violence...wouldn't you?

She is also painfully aware of people like you trying to lay the blame of the violence displayed by her son's murderer on anyone else rather than his disgusting father.

This was no myth....it was a reality.

Suseonline, 1, you already know that mothers do this at over double the rate fathers do.
2, you already know that the poor man was suffering from battered spouse syndrome.
3, why are you so determined to get children abused & killed?

It would appear that Greg Anderson may have had undiagnosed mental illness. If it wasn't a mental illness then it could have possibly been a psychological disorder.

<A former housemate told the Herald Sun Anderson earned the nicknames Obnoxious
<and NQR (Not Quite Right) because of his BIZARRE behaviour.

Yes what Greg Anderson did, defies belief, it also defies belief that mothers who neglect their children and cause their deaths, are almost invisible perpetrators in the media and DV advocates.

Of course I have heard of mothers killing their own children, and yes the death of any child, caused by anyone, is horrendous. I have never said anything otherwise.

What I don't like is the current push by some people to explain away Anderson's dreadful actions by any means possible. Why?
He may well have had a mental illness, but not all people with mental illnesses have the urge to kill their son with a baseball bat and a knife, and not all murderers have a mental illness.

I think the push by some people to explain Anderson's actions is because they don't like Rosie Batty refusing to go away. They don't like a woman daring to fight the current ineffective domestic violence actions.
They don't like all the attention she is getting, when they are getting nothing at all....

A woman with a mental illness stole a pistol from a pistol club and shot her father dead.

Sure it is true not that not all people with mental illness will kill and it is not possible to extrapolate that all instances of domestic violence resulting in death.

Part of the screening process in hospitals for aggression risk, is there a history of involvement in the justice system, a history of drug or alcohol abuse, previous history of assault, a psychiatric illness.

A history of a mental illness is just one the risk factors, and I think that there is a strong indication that our psychiatric services are failing.

Anderson also committed suicide by cop.

This is not excusing what Anderson did, but points to a very disturbed man who our legal and psychiatric services failed.

Had interventions been effective, it is likely that that tragedy may never have happened.

I agree WollyB, both the legal and mental health system did fail this man and his son.
However, it does appear that Rosie was worried about her son having unsupervised contact with their son for very good reason.

Certainly there should be much more effective ways to keep such people away from vulnerable family members.
I think we need more mental health and legal staff working together in these cases, and a much easier way to detain violent people against their will.

Suseonline, so you admit Rosy Batty's ex was mentally ill? here's the problem? settled science shows the most likely cause of his mental illness is verbal, emotional, financial abuse from HER? psychological torture from HER? was he suffering from "battered partner syndrome"? did he act to protect his son from a worse fate? namely HER?

i was with 6 children rescued from 3 dead beat mothers yesterday, all "mothers" were drug addicts, on heroin or ice, 4 under 4 years of age. they are being cared for by a well intentioned, frazzled woman who is only addicted to tobacco & alcohol, who is also separated from the father of her daughter who just became aunty to this tragedy as she goes through puberty herself. 6 more children, 4 of them girls being raised without a loving father thanks to communist feminism, who will grow up to be single mothers, probably sub standard themselves. one of them has a dislocated hip, the older sister already looks depressed at 8.

welcome to the feminist matriarchy constructed by you & people like you. the youngest baby is 6 months & has had 3 changes of surname already as mummy was not certain who daddy was. third time lucky as the multiple DNA tests finally have a winner.

do you feel proud of what YOU have done & still defend?

Q, what is the definition of insanity? A, repeating the same experiment, expecting different results. This drivel of yours has been worsening for half a century now? at what point do we admit that communist, atheist, feminist matriarchy is a well documented, scientifically proven failure & go back to what we knew was working, namely conservative, christian, capitalist patriarchy?

As expected a typical communist female deflection or lateral logic. No direct answers to any of the facts in evidence. Just another attempt at sarcasm & avoidance or entrenching communist antisocial policies.

Q, if feminism's answers to domestic violence over the last half century are not working? will doubling down on more of the same reduce DV? or prevent any DV? or continue worsening the problem which was created by communist feminists in the first place?

i will pray for your soul in church this morning. "There is no pain worse than the prick of a guilty conscience" & feminism has many abused children to feel guilty about. Have you read any biographies of Marx? or any other prominent communists like Friedan, Sontag, Greer, Hitchens? These people despite their fame, prominence all displayed & in the case of Greer still display symptoms of self hatred, cognitive dissonance & serious mental illness.

The white race is the cancer of human history; it is the white race and it alone — its ideologies and inventions — which eradicates autonomous civilizations wherever it spreads, which has upset the ecological balance of the planet, which now threatens the very existence of life itself.” http://capitalismmagazine.com/2005/01/susan-sontag-not-so-judicious/

i sleep well at night knowing that my efforts are directed at attempting if possible to defend innocent children from stone cold evil like you. Do you sleep well at night? knowing you are supporting the child abuse industry? You do realise that feminism = communism = devil worship don't you?

The posters on this site are becomes more and more bizarre
Feminist communist ? That is just indecipherable
Firstly, we just don't have any communists anywhere
A communist is focused on the distribution of wealth and income and realises that extreme inequality is the cause of most if not quite all of our ills
A communist would not be distracted with this PC sideshow - domestic violence, racism, gender ... which distracts the populace from confronting the plutocracy

A communist would limit there polemic towards revealing the diabolical failings of the neoliberal world

So don't be giving communists a bad name by equating it with feminism.

Feminism elevates a symptom to obscure the cause and thereby entraps all of us into a world of endless impotent whining.

Like most of our social causes they are impotent inventions and false dichotomies scraped from the ruins of our christian values. It divides and distracts us

YEBIGA, 1, almost all left of center voters are far left communists or international socialists, apart from a few center left national socialists or fascists.
2, communism invented feminism to destroy the family & groom children for pedophiles. the evidence is everywhere.
3, communism = left wing plutocracy or feudalism or divide & conquer. communists invented political correctness, wake up.
4, enlightened, conservative protesting christians = freedom & democracy. communism = slavery, serfdom & feudalism.
