Do we need artists to be the "compass" of society? Plenty of other people are making comments upon the ideas, aspirations, and events going on around them.

Anyway, even if it were the last bastion of intellectual freedom, it doesn't follow that it "will have been commercialized by the ultra wealthy and sectional institutions within our society" because you have ignored one vital fact: the number of artists greatly exceeds (and probably always will exceed) the number of commercially successful artists.

- it doesn't mention the gender realities of art. For centuries charming male "Great Artists" have sold to rich females with time on their hands. How many great female artists can one identify? Ratios?
