A letter to the new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull : Comments

By Tristan Ewins, published 17/9/2015

Hopefully under your leadership the Liberals will now remain within their mandate. No cuts to education, no changes to pensions, no cuts to the ABC and SBS.

LEGO - we have very small government in Australia by global standards. To match Swedish levels of social/public expenditure we'd have to increase outlays by $300 billion a year! To get that in perspective I am arguing for an increase of up to $80 billion/annually - built up to over 10 years. And I don't expect Turnbull to implement a social democratic platform. :-P But I wouldn't rule out his supporting National Aged Care Insurance - just like the Libs agreed to the NDIS. There's no modelling on how much that would cost. But it would probably be a minimum $10 billion - in a $1.6 Trillion economy.... In other words its a crucial social reform - but should not be out of the range of a genuine small 'l' liberal reforming government. Of course the problem is that everyone is calling Turnbull a small 'l' liberal, but he may turn out to be a 'big 'L' Liberal' (although not a Conservative). But its worth trying to appeal to his better angels. :-)
