Clearly, Australia should take some of these desperate people, to relieve the burden on Europe. Perhaps then, we can wait to see if the Muslim countries, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Iran, take a proportionate number of people as well.
Once that has been done, we can think of perhaps taking another 12,000 - perhaps on an annual basis.
But one caution: imagine if Harvey Norman halved their prices: would that, do you think, lead to an increased flow of customers ? Quite possibly. So, - forgive me for stretching an analogy to breaking point - if Europe takes, say, a million this year, how many should we take next year ? And the next ?
In the paper today, it casually mentioned a camp in northern Nigeria with 800,000 refugees or displaced people. Eight hundred thousand. Just from Nigeria. I don't know how many great-hearted people from the Goat Cheese Circle there may be who can wipe their eyes and who are willing to take in refugees, perhaps a dozen or so (that's perhaps a bit optimistic), but with sixty million refugees, and probably as many internally-displaced people, and perhaps ten times as many potential economic refugees, they may be spoilt for choice.
Yes, let's weep for a three-year-old washed up on a beach. And also for the seventy one highly decomposed bodies, with their putrid juices dripping out the back of a truck. Or we can try to bring these ghastly conflicts to a faster end by bombing the daylights out of the ISIS fascists, for a start. Then Assad.
