Some Professor in Melbourne recently (female) claimed that 80 something percent of women & 60 something Percent of men experience some form of mental illness at times. It was in the paper & I cut it out as usual, but I can't find it at the moment.

I would have thought that the women's percentage would have been higher & for longer. ;-)

What, exactly defines Mental Illness. Some women murders her kids but gets away with it because she was having a bad hair day & then it was all a mans fault anyway.

I would have thought that severe Mental Illness would have been total loss of mental ability. Apparently getting angry because of not getting your own way is mental illness, but only in women.

waiting...

This article refers to <the dubious claim of repetitive strain injury in the 1980's>

This condition was well known in earlier centuries when people recorded
Everything by writing it down. The scribes and bookkeepers would often loose the use of their hand, then had to use the other hand to write with. The condition was called
Writers cramp.

Good article. The left love turning groups into 'victims'. One way, as the article states, is to use mental disorders. This isn't new though. The left have long used Freud to pathologise any behaviour that doesn't align with their "progressive" idealism. Adorno and Marcuse are two that I know of off the top of my head. Today's "progressivism" is a continuation of that trend that began with the Frankfurt School and Gramsci. However, more recently, examining "power structures" have become central to their attempts to demonise their opposition.

The article is also correct in that conservatives have a bit of work to do in combating this. There have been attempts (Roger Scruton and a plethora of conservative and libertarian writers from the U.S., for example) to counter this. But they receive little air/screen time.

The path ahead for conservatives on this is a hard one. It's so easy to turn people into 'victims', because many people are ready to blame anyone or anything on their own failings. Lefties take full advantage of this. Teaching self-responsibility is a hard ask, and I honestly can't see the conservatives winning this battle. The left have successfully weakened the resilience of the masses, giving them a truck load of excuses of why they have failed in their life endeavours, and zero encouragement of how to overcome those endeavours.

Aristocrat, you've got it completely wrong. The Left recognises that many people are victims of circumstance. This doesn't absolve people of personal responsibility, nor weaken anyone's resilience. The idea that it would is part of the Right's attempt to deny victimhood (or worse still, blame the victims) so that they can continue the policies that victimise people.

As for "pathologising any behaviour that doesn't align with their 'progressive' idealism", what behaviour would that be apart from indifference to the suffering of others?
