SA VET training hits rock bottom : Comments

By Malcolm King, published 2/6/2015

Across Australia 850,000 people are hunting for work but there's only 150,000 jobs. South Australia is the worst place in mainland Australia to find a job.

An interesting article. "VET" being vocational education and training (new to me).

As Adelaidians await a ship building bonanza of around 10 submarines and 8 future frigates, they shouldn't hold their breath. Ships built in Australia have been found to cost between 30% and 200% more to build here than overseas (in places like Spain and South Korea).

The Abbott Government is worried that South Australian shipbuilding managers and unions engineer cost blowouts and missed deadlines out of a sense of duty to score more Federal money for South Australia. Is the Abbott Government right in thinking that?

Malcolm King "Across Australia 850,000 people are hunting for work but there's only 150,000 jobs.
It's only a matter of time before the Commonwealth Government intervenes..."

But they couldn't stop immigration, could they, Mr Pile-Em-In?
That would be waysist.

Yes Malcolm, there's just no point training people for nonexistent jobs!

And hasn't privatizing unemployment resulted in far worse and much more costly outcomes, and just to accommodate the ideological fix!?

What we need instead, is a government that ACTUALLY UNDERSTANDS the economy, and what needs to be done to get it up and running again; rather than laying there like some sort of a corpse, needing the paddles and electric shocks to get it at least breathing again!?

And just what you'd expect when dogma and ideology replace reason and logic!?

If we were however, to once again roll out publicly provided power, i.e. thorium reactors linked to small/modest micro links, we'd be able to more than halve the price of industrial energy/resuscitate cost effective car manufacture, ship and sub building?

Gold plated privatized energy is far and away the largest impediment to manufacture, which along with a feudal tax system, with added layer upon layer of added complexity; actively mitigates against jobs!

Conversely, successful new startups, which when successful, are most often spectacularly so!

And for every one job in any such new enterprise, 5 new ones are created in the wider economy.

What we however see is, I believe, a hopelessly incompetent, myopically focused government, fighting a rearguard action to protect and further entrench privilege!?

And entirely non essential self serving state governments trying to prove they have a right to exist/impose their quite massive entirely unnecessary cost structures on the rest of us!

There's a lot we could otherwise do with the (wasted) 70 billions plus (new power stations, rapid rail connecting us to Asia via a very fast roll on roll off ferry service) they suck annually from the arteries of the economy, as mere existence money and before so much as a single service is rolled out!?

Governments need to get back in the business of providing cost effective essential service and otherwise just getting out of the way!

With one exception, we remain the most over-governed people on the planet; and that before anything else, is both risible and ruinous!

There could be large tariffs placed on imports and a 10 year moratorium on immigration. This would restore the once great farming and manufacturing communities of rural Australia, and relieve people of crowded cities, over priced apartments and of meaningless "service" jobs.

Rhrosty,

You do not explain why you say, “With one exception, we remain the most over-governed people on the planet.” This is a common statement, but a little research shows it has no justification.

Australia is just one of 80 countries in the world with more than 10 million people, all of which have at least three tiers of government, as does every one of the 51 countries of more than 500,000 square kilometres.

I have not included the members of the European parliament in any of the calculations, but if I did, all the ratios for EU member countries would be even lower.

The summary of the ratios of politicians (not including local councillors) to population follows:
1. Switzerland 1:2690
2. Sweden: 1:4724
3. Belgium 1:8234
4. France 1:9494
5. Austria 1:12,266
6. New Zealand 1:13,456
7. Denmark 1:14,583
8. The Netherlands 1:16,987
9. Spain 1:22,467
10. Australia 1:25,485
11. Canada 1:29, 915
12. Germany 1:34,324
13. USA 1:40,334
(http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?article=15884&page=0)

Australia thus ranks 10th out of the 13 countries I have examined. It is nowhere near having the fewest people per politician in the world. In fact, its ratio is 10 times that if the country in my list with the lowest one.

The UK’s system is so varied that a direct comparison is not possible. Some parts of the country have unitary authorities. Some parts have county council and district councils. London, Northern Ireland and Wales have assemblies and local councils. Scotland has its own parliament and local councils. Some places have civil parish councils and others do not.

The UK had at least 23,947 politicians (including local councillors). That was one politician per 2631 people (in a population that is now 63 million).

Australia has 824 state and federal politicians. There are about 6600 local councillors in Australia (http://alga.asn.au/?ID=42). That makes a total of 7424 politicians, or one for every 3098 people (in a population of 23 million), still more people per politician than in UK.

"The next time you get in your car, don't feel guilty about increasing the level of CO2 in the atmosphere, instead feel good inside about helping the Indian farmers grow more wheat."

First of all I don't drive or own a car. Worldwide environmental, social, issues and economic policies alongside population need to be considered. The above are vital to link together for a sustainable future. Trying to have some without others - won't please a lot of animal species (including humans) - whatever change we're having re climate, be it Autumn Summer, Winter or Spring.

Even The World Bank says, in terms of India:

"Although the past decade of rapid economic growth has brought many benefits to India, the environment has suffered, exposing the population serious air and water pollution." and that:

"A new report finds that environmental degradation costs India $80 billion per year or 5.7% of its economy." and "Green growth strategies are needed promote sustainable growth and to break the pattern of environmental degradation and natural resource depletion. Emission reductions can be achieved with minimal cost to GDP."

http://www.worldbank.org/en/news/feature/2014/03/06/green-growth-overcoming-india-environment-challenges-promote-development

Other issues environmentally facing India at present include air pollution, poor management of waste, growing water scarcity, falling groundwater tables, water pollution, (a need for) preservation and quality of forests, (issues relating to) biodiversity loss, and (issues relating to) land/soil degradation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_issues_in_India

With India's large population at present, there are many people living in poor conditions or face serious social/health problems such as:

1. Having one-third of the world’s poor living in India;

2. No ability to grow enough crops, due to lack of new farming techniques available and farming being affected by weather conditions, poor storage, and lack of water;

3. Health and medical issues affecting people in India such as HIV/AIDS;

India's population is over 1.271 billion people (2015), and more than a sixth of the world's population. More people equals more impacts in a range of areas, so I don't see how this article makes any serious difference to issues facing India or in fact anywhere.
