Oligarchs with a country: Jokowi's team : Comments

By Duncan Graham, published 29/10/2014

The response from the Jakarta commentariat to the Cabinet has been lukewarm, tinted with concern, largely because 14 politicians have been included, apparently for supporting the PDI-P rather than for their expertise and achievements.

Australia should do all it can to support Indonesia's democracy, development and governance model and build close ties with Present Jokowi and his team. We can not expect Indonesia to be a mirror image of Australia but we can expect it to work with Australia in solving some of the most pressing economic, security, social and environmental challenges which face us in our region. It will be great if President Jokowi visits Australia a.s.a.p.

Hi Duncan Graham

Another excellent commentary on the rise of Jokowi.

Some great imagery worthy of a novelist:

"the establishment's elaborately coiffed ice matrons shouldering Gucci bags of sharpened hatpins...like many Indonesians – are not great readers of anything longer than a 140 character tweet."

Concerning "Indonesia's 4.5 million khaki-uniformed bureaucrats" I noticed the Ministry heads are dressed like generals. Even Jokowi in his Governor of Jakarta uniform http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joko_Widodo#Governor_of_Jakarta . I assume the generals' uniforms imply patriot founders of Indonesia (or fighters for freedom) more than generalissimo-ware?

I suppose Ryamizard Ryacudu is the Defence Minister Jokowi needs to have if Jokowi is to keep the real Javanese "Born to Rule" Generals at bay?! Jokowi's predecessor was, of course, not only a natural for the job because he was a popular democrat - being a former Army Chief helped.

Hoping that the pace won't be set by that lethargic shopper Megawati Sukarnoputri. There is a danger that she will pull the strings of Jokowi a puppet.

Still, if Indonesia is stable rather than surprising, that will be good for Australia.

Regards

Pete
