Are we in the midst of a crime wave? : Comments
By Don Aitkin, published 10/7/2014Over the last fifty years there has been a great decline in church-going, too. Does all that tell us anything? Not to me. Too many variables.

Media coverage may well be part of it, but there seems to be an inbuilt tendency in some people to assume that things are getting worse, despite evidence to the contrary. It’s a very similar story with the “rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer” mantra. The evidence shows overwhelmingly that both rich and poor are getting richer, but some people simply refuse to believe this.

Come round my neighborhood and look then you might change your mind about the poor.
As for Church they seem to be front and center of the crime atm Posted by Aussieboy, Thursday, 10 July 2014 8:36:17 PM

Mere mortals like you and I and the rest of us in the street can do little about any crime situation regardless of trends, apparent or actual.
Current favourites such as burgs, car theft and common assault will vary from area to area, depending on the soc/eco levels there. Jails are overflowing, which could indicate an increase in crime. It may also indicate a Governments disinterest in building jails. Media plays a big part. Evening TV being drenched with all the criminal activities of the day. Maybe this conjures up an illusion of increasing crime rates, or maybe this is reality. Then, maybe this cartoon paints a picture of where we're at . . . http://cartoonmick.wordpress.com/editorial-political/#jp-carousel-756 Cheers Mick Posted by Cartoonmick, Saturday, 12 July 2014 5:16:26 PM

Don Aitkin does not mention assault other than sexual assault.
There's the elephant in the room. Talk to any long serving staff working in accident & emergency in any fair sized public hospital and I'm sure they will have some opinions - which may well be backed by crime statistics. Was this an oversight on Don's part? So much alcohol and drug violence often unprovoked, often resulting in serious injuries and sometimes permanent disability. So many more serious assaults on children - in many cases by a de facto father - or at least it seems that way. Don - can you enlighten this reader please? Divine Man;
The booze assaults etc may only have a small effect on the statistics because they happen in one or two particular places. One statistic of interest would be whether crimes involving fire arms are up. Posted by Bazz, Monday, 14 July 2014 3:38:21 PM

Old retireds can watch the same violent reports repeated 10 to 20 times per day on TV news bulletins on ABC News 24 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC_News_24 . Sheer repetition breeds simple-minded belief and Hey If It Bleeds It Leads.
With simple wonderment they look back to the "less violent" days which coincidentally were in the years before 2010 when ABC News 24 began.
