Obama on the brink: war or peace? : Comments

By Marjorie Cohn, published 23/6/2014

The United States should propose a resolution in the Security Council that would require an immediate ceasefire in Iraq and peacekeepers under UN auspices be sent to Iraq.

Good to see some truth being published for a change.

The USA is a failed economy that has been looted by it's corrupt financial system. They have growing unrest at home and right throughout Europe. War has always been the solution to broke economies and an angry domestic population.

Dr Paul Craig Roberts says he never seen such a collection of imbeciles with no moral compass which currently runs the US Govt.

We are all at fault because we let our Govts get away with lies and deception constantly. We treat this as the norm.

The UN Security Council needs to show unity, leadership and foresight for bringing peace and reconstruction in Syria and Iraq.

‘morning Marjorie,

Of course the rest of the world should get together with the ME combatants to reach a resolution.

Then we can press them to accept a UN resolution and implement it? There is something wonderful about the “dreamtime” commentaries and solutions that sound so simple we have to wonder why they have not been achieved so far.

Just let me see if I have this right. The combatants are slaughtering their opposition in the most vile and barbaric fashion. They do this in breach of the existing Geneva Convention and yet, you still believe they will comply with yet another UN dictate?

Rocks meet head!

Facts good; recommendations bad.

The idea that the solution is MORE intervention by the US is so obviously failed and immoral and miserable that you can only shake your head in wonder at how people can't free themselves from this vicious belief system. Perhaps they should try keeping out of it for a change?

The statists always seem unable to grasp the fact that the State is by definition based on unilateral aggression. This fact underlies and affects everything they do.

The idea of the USA having any legitimate moral role in Iraq is laughable. If there were justice, all the Presidents and Cabinet ministers, as well as all the British and Australian PMs and Cabinet ministers who participated, should be prosecuted as war criminals. They've spent 25 years, plundered their own people for trillions of dollars, killed untold people mostly civilians, totally failed, and now they're talking about killing and bombing and interfering again!

The flaw in the author's plan is that it gives place to the war criminals who caused the problem in the first place, and keeps on and on and on assuming that the answer is more states, more compulsion, more force, more interfering aggression, more telling everyone else what to do, more pretending that the State knows better.

There is simply no reason why the state of Iraq should be considered sacrosanct or defended; no reason why it should not be dismembered by its own subjects.

The violence of ISIS only demonstrates some small measure of the force people have to bring against the State if they are not to be taxed and hounded and forced into obedience against their will. ISIS are only rejecting the aggressive imperialism we would reject, and only matching force commensurate with force without which they can't get rid of a criminal gang they have every right to throw off.

Have to agree with spindoc.
And can only add, if the seemingly radical extremely self centred J.K.J. objects to paying tax, then he should go to Iraq.
Or, given violence only ever begets violence, wait the obligatory three or so years, and then add his vote to those who would usher in change we can all believe in!?
Few if any pay tax in a country, with that much oil revenue?
It's hard to believe some industry analysts seriously believe, we could have reserves to rival or perhaps eclipse the Middle East!?
The very worst days work we did was to heritage list the Great Barrier Reef.
Which contrary to popular green legend, is not a single reef at all, just a series of adjacent coral reefs.
Some of which may even be dependent on the oil leaks, that tell old fashioned prospectors, there is considerable oil there, and at comparatively shallow depths!
What would happen if there was the postulated oil and in significant quantities, and we gave ourselves permission to access it, as the only sane reaction to an increasingly volatile middle east.
Well first, we'd likely be able to pocket the 26 billion, we currently shell out for fully imported foreign oil; the second, a massive reduction in transport originated carbon, given traditional Australian sweet light crude, leaves the ground as a virtually ready to use higher quality sulfur free diesel, needing little if any carbon creating energy dependent refining.
And petrol variants can run on methanol, made by passing NG through a relatively simple catalyst.
Other than that, LPG is a condensate which flows out of gas wells as a free ready to use condensate, and or, most combustion engines will run on CNG.
What does our government do?
Sit on their hands or rush to sell off the family farm, the family silver, or our national sovereignty, at fire sale prices?
And when we are paying $2-3.00 a litre, what will that do to our economy?
We've got seriously bigger things to worry about, than yet another tribal war in the M.E.

"Obama has expressed a willingness to collaborate with Iran, a Shiite-led country with close ties to the al-Maliki government, about ending the bloodshed in Iraq. This is a positive development, which hopefully will encompass broader issues, including the conflict in Syria, where Iran supports President Bashar al-Assad."

How ironic! Was not Obama vehemently opposed to Iran not so long ago? Also, was he not proposing military aid to the rebels opposing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad?

So the USA is going to "usher in change we can all believe in" in Iraq?

Trying to get stuff from people by threatening to attack them is self-centred; defending their right to be free of aggression is not. You've got it back-the-front.

What do guys expect?

She's a left-wing human rights lawyer, an academic, a yank, and ummm, heaven-forbid-it a w..... with a gawky smile.

I like the idea of Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese UN Peacekeeping troops in Iraq. It would provide practice for World War Three.

Anyone serious about the ISIS Crisis would be reading http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=16422 :-P

And who is to say that the situation in Iraq today is not exactly the situation envisaged and desired when the destabilization began a decade and more ago?
Iraq was invaded after a decade of destabilizing sanctions. It was sent to to hell in a handcart.
Syria was fractured, and this new group of jihadist nutcases was engendered in the cause of Bashar al-Assad regime change.
Now both Iraq and Syria are broken into bite-sized pieces.
Will the Kurds be allowed to keep their newly won homeland in northern Iraq? Turkey and Iran might have something to say about that as such a development could be considered contagious. There are sizable numbers of Kurds in both countries.
And throughout this time it has been known, if almost never acknowledged, that Iran is the key. Do we want to encourage stability in that part of the world? Talk to Iran. And why don't we? Israel doesn't want us to. And why is that? Who is it again who wants that part of our world reduced to bite-sized pieces?
The dots are all there, and it's really not all that hard to connect them.

Jardine K Jardine why have Bush, Blair, Howard, Downer and others not been convicted of war crimes,? they should be, is it because they sit on the so called "right side of the fence" how do these people sleep at night with all of the killing of innocent people that they caused in the first place, or do they think it was not me being killed so why should I worry, we only make the rules for others to kill in our name.

US INVADES EUROPE 6th June, 1944.

Seven Hundred French civilians were killed today when US Forces invaded Europe. Opposition to the invasion was running high. “We are dying for no reason” said a French citizen who spoke to reporters only on the condition of anonymity. “ I hate to say this, but life was better under Hitler.”

The invasion has caused severe environmental damage. American troops, trucks, tanks and machinery have destroyed miles of pristine French shoreline and thousands of acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands. It is believed that the home of a unique species, the Spineless French Frog, was destroyed in the process, threatening the species with extinction.

A representative of Greenpeace, said that his organization, which tried to prevent the invasion, was appalled at the destruction, but not surprised. “This is an example of how the US military destroys the environment without a second thought”, said Christine Moanmore, “and it is all about corporate greed.”

Contacted in his Manhattan condo, a member of the French Government-in-exile who fled France when disciplined soldiers of the German government occupied it, said the US invasion was all about protecting US financial interests. “Everyone knows that President Roosevelt has ties to Big Beer”, said Pierre LeWimp. “Once the German beer industry has been conquered, Roosevelt and his beer cronies will control the world market and make a fortune.”

Administration supporters claimed that the aggressive US actions were based in part upon the assertions of controversial Jewish scientist Albert Einstein who has speculated that the German Government was secretly developing a so called “atomic bomb.”

Such a weapon could produce casualties on a scale never seen before and cause environmental damage which could last for thousands of years. But the German leader, Adolf Hitler, has denied having such a weapon and international inspectors were unable to locate this weapon, even after spending two long weekends in a German beergarten looking for them.

Continued.

Continued

Mistreatment of Jews at so called “concentration camps” has been rumoured but remains unproven. But many reports by "independent investigators" have surfaced that captured German soldiers "rendered" by the Americans to allied countries for incarceration without trial. Amnesty International has denounced the US for not providing lawyers for hundreds of thousands of German soldiers and for not specifying what crimes they committed to warrant incarceration.

Several thousand US soldiers died in the first few days of the invasion and French officials are concerned that the thousands of rotting corpses pose a serious public health risk. “The Americans should have planned for this in advance”, they said. “ It is their mess and we don’t propose to clean it up.”

It is believed that the USA also intends to invade Germany and topple the legitimate and elected government of that country, headed by the very popular Adolph Hitler. New York Times reporter Brian Ross has demanded to know "by what right does the US think they have to invade Germany?"

Majorie glosses over the mass murders committed by Sadam Hussien. One would think that Iraq was a peace loving country before the USA etc toppled Hussien. The simple fact is that the different Muslim groups had been killing each other for centuries. She also fails to acknowledge that the naive Americans allowed many Muslims to escape to the US only to have them trained and then poop on the nation that gave them freedom for the first time in their life.

Majorie writes 'Obama has an unprecedented opportunity to be a real peacemaker in Iraq '. She lives in la la land. Obama appears only interested in a legacy. I doubt whether history will see him as any sort of hero (except the usual leftist revisionist).

One point, the Iranians have said quite categorically that they are not co-operating with the U.S. and would not do so under any circumstances, if they did they'd face a second Islamic revolution, no two ways about it.
There's another widespread misapprehension about the power structure in Washington, the Neocons (Neo Jacobin Left) do control the White House and State Department but they don't control the congress or the military.
This Islamic civil war can't be stopped, the fact that it's been kept at a lower intensity for about 25 years doesn't mean that it ceased or that any of the core issues were addressed, it's going to result in a re drawing of the map of the Middle East and central Asia and the elimination of most of the borders.
As I said in another thread, there's no such thing as an Islamic nation, only an Islamic empire.

runner get the story straight. Saddham Hussein was a US generated dictator who thought he could be greater than the Banking Military Industrial Complex.

Saddham started trading oil in Euros instead of US $ and the big Western oil cartels wanted more ownership of Iraqi oil. It is oil and gas that underpins the US $.

The BMIC currently want to build oil and gas pipelines to Europe thus cutting off the power that Russia has by suppling 40% of Europe's energy. This is all about pipeline politics and making Russia slave to their New World Order of Global Fascism.

Watch carefully, if the ISIS moves into the south and stops the export
of Iraq oil, make no mistake the loss of the 2nd largest oil exporter
will not go unnoticed in this country.
It does not seem that Saudi Arabia can increase its output by the amount lost.

I suspect that the ISIS will not be interested in going into the south.
They might be interested in taking over Baghdad.

Hi Bazz, try Mecca, and the fun is really going to start.

I hope you didn't hand in your semi autos and stocked up on ammo in 1997? With only 72,000 Steyr rifles in Australia and our ammunition being manufactured in China, it looks like the government is going to have to appeal to sporting shooters during wartime again, this time to save the country from the people we have imported.

LOL yeah.

It's ironical that western governments have been invading Iraq at least in part over the strategic importance of oil, while busily - and deliberately - destroying their own energy industries.
